Title: What is the LMS

1
What is the LMS?
  • The LMS is the University of Melbournes new
Learning Management System. The LMS is provided
to assist you with your studies throughout the
    semester.
  • You will use the LMS to
  • access course materials (such as lecture slides
    and assignment sheets)
  • view announcements (announcements will be posted
throughout the semester and will contain
important information about the subject, such as
reminders about an upcoming assignment due date)
  • perform online tasks (such as submitting an
    assignment).
  • The course outline, lecture notes, assignments,
and other learning resources will all be made
    available through the LMS.
  • In addition, you will also have access to online
tools such as feedback quizzes, interactive
courseware, and audio recordings of lectures.
Subject coordinators add or remove tools
    specific to your subject

Benefits of the LMS
  • Single location - www.lms.unimelb.edu.au ? As of
semester 1, 2007, you will be able to access all
your subject content from this website using a
single login. Currently, this subject is one of
approximately 50 subjects in the faculty which is
    using the LMS.
  • Standardised appearance and navigation ? If you
have used the LMS before, then you should find
accessing the page for this subject a familiar
experience, as all LMS subject pages use the same
    basic appearance and navigation system.
  • Access to in-built tools ? The LMS provides a
number of standard online learning tools designed
to enhance your learning outcome. The method for
performing assessment tasks and using the online
learning tools is the same across subjects,
departments, and faculties (with the exception of
specialised tools such as those provided by the
    TLU).

Student Resources
  • The university has created a central website
dedicated to the Learning Management System ?
    http//www.lms.unimelb.edu.au
  • The Student Support section can be found here
    http//www.lms.unimelb.edu.au/students/
  • The Guides for Students page in the Student
    Support section (http//www.lms.unimelb.edu.au/stu
    dents/guides/) contains student resources
including a downloadable user guide and several
help sheets describing how to correctly configure
Internet Explorer for use with the LMS. Refer to
this section if you experience difficulties
    accessing the LMS.
  • The News and Events section (http//www.lms.unimel
b.edu.au/news/) provides details of any scheduled
    maintenance windows. Maintenance windows usually
occur once every four weeks during semester, but
do not occur during SWOT Vac or examination
periods. You should be aware of any scheduled
downtime, and make sure that it does not conflict
with an assignment submission or planned study
    period.
