What Is a Tsunami?
  • In Japanese a Tsunami is called a harbor wave.
  • A Tsunami is a series of large waves.

How is a Tsunami Formed?
  • Each ocean has a plate. Usually they move 2.5
    inches a year. Sometimes the plate slips and it
    sends out shocks causing a earthquake. When the
    shocks go out it causes a big tidal wave.

  • At 758am on Dec. 26 2004 there was a powerful
    earthquake under water in the Indian Ocean
  • the Indian plate usually moves north at about
    2.5 miles per year
  • Then on Dec.26 the plate moved about 50ft. at
    once
  • The Indian plate went down and the Burma plate
    went up
  • Doctors and nurses treated thousands
  • They helped to prevent the spread of disease that
    could quickly spread around
