Symmetry
  • The term symmetry comes from the Greek words
    sun(with or together) and metron(measure).
  • From the beginning symmetry was related to
    harmony, beauty, and unity.
  • Much is discovered by observing the patterns
    surrounding us in nature.

3
Symmetry
  • Mathematics is more than finding sums and
differences. Mathematics is a way of looking at
the world. You view the world looking for
    patterns or lack of patterns.
  • We are surrounded by all types of symmetry in
nature, in architecture, in art and much more.

4
Standards
  • 2.9 E Identify and draw lines of symmetry in
    geometric figures.
  • 2.9 F Identify symmetry in nature

5
Lines of Symmetry
  • Line Symmetry a figure that can be folded in
such a way that one half of it lies exactly on
    the other half.
  • Rotational Symmetry a figure is said to have
rotational symmetry if there exists a point
around which the figure can be rotated less than
one complete turn of 360 degrees in order to
    result in an identical figure.
  • Point Symmetry a figure is said to have point
symmetry if it can be rotated one-half of a turn
or 180 degrees about a point onto itself.
