Happy New Year It's nice to see you.

The Mathematics Intensive Review
  • Each grade, 3-8 will receive a 25-session plan
  • The plan is designed to get the largest bang for
    the buck!
  • The plan cross-references the texts currently used

4
What each day will look like
  • The plan calls for 30 minutes of focus on a CMT
strand and 30 minutes mathematics instruction
    from the curriculum.
  • For grades 3-4, the Saxon morning meeting will
continue with a strong focus on application.
Teachers must focus on time, money, facts and
    integrated understanding.
  • For grade 5, application will continue in the
    Everyday Counts lesson.
  • Grades 6-8 will acquire their applications from
Focus on the CMT by OPTIONS and cross-reference
    in the texts.

5
Vocabulary
  • The CMT handbook comes with a vocabulary sheet
    for each grade.
  • Teachers must ensure that students are familiar
with all test direction and content words

6
The ring
  • Circle will only be used to describe the set of
all points equidistant from a give point.
  • Ring will be used as a noun and verb meaning to
encircle or a round drawing around a correct
    answer

7
Rulers
  • Grades 3 4 use white rulers (half inch and cm)
  • Grades 5-8 use blue rulers (1/8 inch and mm)
  • This year both are left side justified!!!!
  • Recommendation Tape a ruler to each desk.

Blue for test
White for test
8
8th grade formula chart
  • All 8th graders need to know how to use
  • Recommendation tape to desk
  • Use in math and science classes

9
Motivation
  • During the intensive review, coaches and
administrators will be visiting schools to give
    short give motivational talks.
  • A visit might be appropriate for a pep rally if
    your school is having one.
  • Limited math manipulatives are available from the
    warehouse on 444 Chapel

10
The grid
  • Grades 5-8 have grid-in questions
  • All students must have practice using grid
  • Begin by gridding whole numbers, then decimals
  • Work toward using the grid regularly

11
Focus on the CMT
  • Published by OPTIONS
  • Excellent 4th generation CMT document.
  • Recommended that each school have a copy for each
    grade
  • Fabulous strategies, examples and assessments

12
The intensive review
  • The math department looked at the data
  • We rank ordered the strands where New Haven
    students historically perform poorly.
  • We developed 25 sessions per grade to address the
    strands by order of priority.
  • Each class should begin with the 30-minute
intensive review session in the booklet provided
    by the math department.

13
The intensive review - continued
  • Then 30 minutes should be spent on the regular
math lesson from the district curriculum and
    pacing guide.
  • Numerous examples from each strand are provided.
  • If a student can correctly answer 4 out of 5
questions from a strand s/he can exit the review
    and begin enrichment.

14
If you have your own intensive review developed
and it is more appropriate for your school than
ours, then familiarize yourself with ours and use
yours.
