Start
  • Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Wisconsin all have
it, but Illinois doesn't. What is it that these
states have? A cool promotional ad campaign to
help tourism grow in their state. You are one of
the top designers in Illinois and the Illinois
Tourism Association has asked you to help with
their new ad campaign. Will you help out the
state that you love? Will you help others see
    and enjoy your beloved state?

3
Task
  • 1. Individually you will create a poster that
will catch people's eyes and provide information
about visiting Illinois. For example you might
want to include what museums to visit, what
historical sites to see, where the best place to
eat is, where the best mall is, and where to
stay. Make it attractive and informative. Use
    your question sheet for information.
  • 2. In your group you will create a TV commercial
to promote tourism in Illinois. Make your
advertisement clever and catchy. It must be
unique, but informative. You will be writing a
script and acting. You will be performing these
commercials in front of the class

4
Process
  • Step 1
  • Research the state of Illinois. Find about some
of the history, general facts, and people.
  • Check out some of these websites
  • Illinois World Web Travel Guide Discovering
    Illinois for Kids
  • Illinois Visitor Page Facts about Illinois
  • Illinois Hotels Historical Sites Museums
  • Restaurants Shopping
  • State Parks

5
Process
  • Step 2 Create your poster advertisement. Make
your poster stand out, so people get excited
    about visiting Illinois. Highlight important
facts about Illinois and information on
interesting sites to visit, places to stay, and
places to eat. Use your question sheet for
information to include. These need to be both
    eye-catching and informative.

6
Process
  • Step 3 Meet with your group to decide which
roles each of you will carry out. Each of you
will help create the commercial's story. You will
    work in groups of 4-5.
  • Writers Write down the script as your
group creates it. Type it up and make enough
    copies for your group members.
  • Props and Costume Director Bring props and
costumes for your group to wear.
  • Actors Act out the commercial. Your lines
    need to be memorized.

7
Process
  • Step 4 After you write the script, and come up
with the props, practice your commercial a number
of times. They need to be at least 5-10 mins, and
need to be entertaining and informative.
  • Step 5 Hand in your poster, and perform your
group commercial in front of the class. We will
have an entire social studies day just for
sharing. When you present, you need to be
completely ready to go, with all of your props at
school, and all of your lines memorized.

Advice
  • Remember that while you are working individually
and as a group that you will be graded on your
effort and creativity as well as your content. I
do not want to sit through a commercial that is
just your group reading off information from a
piece of paper. Conversely, I do not want to see
an entertaining commercial that does not give me
any information about the state of Illinois.

End
  • Congratulations on completing your ad campaign!
You have greatly helped out the Tourism
Department of Illinois. Now Illinois is among the
Great Lake states that has a great ad campaign.
Who knows maybe you will work for an advertising
agency some day and you could use your commercial
    as an idea.
  • You have learned a lot about the
culture and geography of Illinois. You learned
how to work in a group to create a major project.
You learned how to effectively advertise with a
brochure and commercial. You also learned about
some of Illinois symbols and treasures.
  • I know you put a lot of effort into
this project and I am very proud of all of you.
    Great Job!
