Ch. 18
  • Kingdom Fungi
  • Part 1

Fungi Intro Clip (200)
2
What are Fungi?
  • Eukaryotic
  • Cells with nuclei.
  • All are Heterotrophs
  • Digest food outside of their bodies and absorb
    it.
  • Cell Walls with chitin
  • Chitin- a complex carb that is also found in the
    exoskeletons of insects.

3
Structure and Function
  • All multicellular (except yeast)
  • Made of hyphae
  • Tiny filaments one cell thick.
  • Hyphae grow in a thick, tangled mass called
    mycelium.
  • The reproductive structure you see above ground
    is called a fruiting body.

5
How Fungi Spread
  • Most fungi reproduce both asexually and sexually.
  • Hyphae break off and grow on their own.
  • Sometimes spores are produced.
  • Spores are produced in sporangia.

6
Sporangia contain spores that are spread by air
or animals.
7
Classification of Fungi
  • Molds
  • Sac Fungi
  • Club Fungi
  • Imperfect Fungi

8
Molds- Zygomycota
  • Fungi that grow on foods.
  • Contain root-like hyphae called rhizoids.
  • Anchor fungi to food and release enzymes.
  • They are decomposing food.
  • Contain zygospores
  • Spore that contains zygotes to make more mold.

9
Ex Rhizopus stolonifer (black bread mold)

11
Sac Fungi- Ascomycetes
  • Contain an ascus.
  • Reproductive structure that contains spores.
  • Meiosis followed by mitosis so that 8 cells
    called ascopores are produced.
  • Largest phylum
  • Ex Yeast, pink coating on shower curtains,

12
Yeast- The only unicellular fungi reproduce by
budding.
