Photo Club Workbook
  • Fall Session 2003
  • Created by
  • Ms. Wells Mr. Fitzpatrick

2
Bruno Barbey - Beggar and ChildrenNaples, Italy
- 1960
  • Look at the beggar. How are the children
reacting? How do you know this?

3
Bruno Barbey - Soccer Fans Italy 1960
  • Look at every individual face in the
picture. What do you think was happening at that
    moment?

4
Alexey Bakman Brighton Beach Fire, 2003
  • This photo and the next one are of the same fire
in Brighton Beach. The photos are made by the
same photographer. Do you prefer the color photo
or the black and white one? Why?

5
Alexey Bakman Brighton Beach Fire, 2003
6
Alfred Eisenstaedt - Agricultural Fair, 1969
  • Crowd pleasing events such as this horse-drawing
contest makes a great photograph with whips
flashing and muscles bulging. It is sometimes
difficult to get just the right angle with some
much going on. Compare this one with the one
Eisie took in color in 1984 on the next slide.

7
Alfred Eisenstaedt - Agricultural Fair, 1984
  • This picture is from a different angle and
obviously it is in color. Which angle do you
prefer and why? Do you like the black and white
    or the color better? Why?

8
Alfred Eisenstaedt Harbor on a Foggy Morning ,
1967
  • Dont think that it always has to be a beautiful
sunny day in order to get great pictures.

9
Alfred Eisenstaedt Hurricane Carol 1954
  • The light and color are often fantastic after a
storm. The destruction that can be caused by
Mother Nature always makes for good picture
making. The two figures in the far right are
necessary to show how big the pile of boats is.

10
Alfred Eisenstaedt - Luxembourg Gardens, Paris
  • Playgrounds are among the best spots for getting
good candid pictures of children. While they are
preoccupied with games they are less likely to be
    aware of being photographed.

11
Rick Smolan A Dance To Summer
  • These students are completely oblivious that the
photographer was taking their picture during this
lunch hour whirl at Nano Nagle School in Cork,
    Ireland.

12
Gary Matoso Morning Bus to Monaghan Collegiate
School
  • Dont overlook the obvious. The ordinary can
    sometimes be extraordinary.

13
Alfred Eisenstaedt Seal Sunning, 1966
  • Waiting patiently for the perfect pose is hard to
    do. Eventually this seal cooperated.

14
Alfred Eisenstaedt Captain Thomas Tilton - 1971
  • It can be a challenge to capture the personality
of your subject when youre taking portraits.
  • Taking a lot of pictures and chatting with your
subject eventually relaxes them and they begin to
    let their true selves emerge.
  • Knowing your subject gives you an even better
chance at making a great picture.

15
Brian Lanker Bridget Harty, County Limerick,
Ireland
  • Bridgets personality really shines through! Can
you identify some elements in the photo that show
    her personality?

16
Alfred Eisenstaedt Paris, France
  • You can not force a good picture to happen. It
took longer than one hour for the two pedestrians
to happen along going in two different directions
which complements the composition of the two
staircases, also going in two different
    directions.

17
Alfred Eisenstaedt - Sunset at Menemsha, 1967
  • Every sunset is different. The light, the
colors, the clouds all the elements coming
together day after day in a new and unique way.

18
Mary Ellen Mark - Blind Orphan India, 1980
  • Mary Ellen Mark says I can tell you
exactly how this photograph happened. Again, it
is knowing the people that youre photographing.
I knew that little girl well, and I also knew her
parents, who were there to adopt her. I spent a
lot of time photographing them. So when that
happened, when she touched her adopted mothers
hand, I was luckily in the right place to take
that photograph. She walked over to her mother,
she leaned against her legs, then she touched her
    hands, it just happened.

19
Mary Ellen Mark - High School Prom Florida,
1986
  • What about the moment shown here makes it
the right moment to take the picture?

20
Silvia Plachy Gull Bite, 1982
  • How do you think the photographer made this
    picture happen?

21
Sylvia Plachy Mishi and Grandpa - 1980
  • Exactly where was the photographer when she
took this picture? Why is it important?

22
Eugene Richards Grandmother, Brooklyn
  • How does water add energy to this photo?

23
Silvia Plachy - Hydrant
  • How does the water add energy to this one?

24
Brian Lanker Laundry Drying County Clare,
Ireland
  • It doesnt get any more ordinary or
    extraordinary than this.

25
David Turnley Michael and Stephen Curtin County
Clare, Ireland
  • Quiet moments between people are best shot with a
telephoto lens from a little farther away
breaking the rule to GET IN CLOSE.
