1
POLICY PRODUCTS PROGRAMS AND PEOPLEWORKING
TOGETHER TO PRESERVE RESOURCES AND REDUCE
EMISSIONS
  • Establish and administer objectives, targets,
and management programs to translate our
Environmental Policies into reality -- and we
    will continuously review these objectives,
targets and programs for further improvement of
    our environmental performance.

2
  • As a worldwide technology leader, Konica Minolta
    takes a global perspective
  • on protecting the environment. One world we live
in. One future we all share.
  • One voice we all speak.
  • With over 30,000 employees in 40 countries, we
    aim to combine sustainable
  • development and profitable growth by integrating
    environmental, economic
  • and social perspectives into our business
    practices.
  • Our goal is to conduct business activities in
    harmony with human lives. Our
  • commitment is steady progress toward resolving
    environmental challenges
  • based on reliable data and quantitative
    measurement of environmental
  • performance and impact.
  • On the following pages, we will explore this
    commitment
  • in Policy, Products, Programs and People.

3
Environmental Policy
  • Promote sustainable development and
    profitable growth. Integrate environmental,
economic and social perspectives into business
strategies so that business activities are
implemented in harmony with human lives and with
    the environment in all aspects.
  • The concept is to make steady progress toward
resolution of environmental challenges based on
quantitative measurement and analysis of reliable
date in regard to environmental performance and
impact. This basic concept is demonstrated in the
    following affirmation
  • Management Based On Facts
  • Working toward a sustainable society as a global
citizenIn response to the call for a sustainable
society, conduct business activities from the
    perspective of on-going enhancement of
    performance in environmental preservation,
    economic growth and social responsibilities
(ethics). Every one of us will enhance its
knowledge and awareness on the environment,
economies and societies on a global scale and act
with responsibility in pursuit of a sustainable
    society.
  • Compliance with laws and other requirementsComply
with legal requirements in respective countries
and regions, as well as Group standards. In
addition, respect, in an equitable manner,
expectations of stakeholders and consensus in the
    international community.

4
Environmental Policy
  • Consideration for the environment throughout the
entire life cycle of products and servicesBe
committed to reducing the environmental load in
all stages throughout the entire life cycle of
    products and services, recognizing that
responsibility for a product rests with its
    manufacture.
  • Initiatives to counter global warmingContinuously
reduce greenhouse gas emissions that derive from
business activities from the perspective of the
life cycle of products and services throughout
the entire Group, recognizing that global warming
is one of the most important world issues.
  • Initiatives toward a recycling-oriented
societyReview what we can do as a corporate
citizens in order to create recycling-oriented
society while striving for minimizing consumption
of natural resources and promoting Zero Waste
Emission activities. In addition, we will
accelerate initiatives for the recovery and
recycling of end-of-life products and packaging
    materials.

5
Environmental Policy
  • Prevention of chemical pollution and minimization
of potential risks to the environment.Take every
    countermeasure for preventing chemical
    pollutions, recognizing that chemical substances
can impose significant impact on human health and
safety and the environment. At the same time,
continuously suppress use of chemicals and reduce
discharge volume in order to minimize
    environmental risks.
  • Promotion of information disclosureExecute
accountability to all the stakeholders by
    actively disclosing environmental information and
ensuring risk communication. Make every effort to
    accomplish commitment to the societies.
Environmental Policy is to be disclosed to the
    public.
  • Establishment of environmental objectives and
    targetsEstablish and administer environmental
objectives, targets, and management programs to
translate this Environmental Policy into reality.
Continuously review such objectives, targets and
programs for further improvement of environmental
    performance.

6
Environmental Management System
  • Use the ISO 14001-based environmental management
system as part of efforts regarding group-wide
environmental activities, which are based on
    unified criteria, stipulating ISO 14001
    acquisitions by all manufacturing affiliate
companies worldwide as a fundamental Group
    policy.
  • To address environmental issues, including the
prevention of global warming and working toward a
    recycling-based society, implement measures in
consideration of the entire product lifecycle. To
accomplish this, the Konica Minolta Group
believes that it must operate not only its
manufacturing sites, but also its product
development, sales and distribution sites, under
an integrated management system and in mutual
    cooperation.
  • Based on this concept, in Japan, acquire
multi-site ISO 14001 certification, so that the
entire Group can be managed under a single ISO
certification. This has enabled prompt and
    efficient environmental activities throughout all
product lifecycle stages. Under this integrated
management system, work to reduce environmental
impact. For instance, promote the sales of
energy-saving products that help reduce CO2
emissions when products are in use, and are
encouraging the collection of used products. This
system is also effective in carrying out
    activities toward minimizing the environmental
load generated directly by companies, such as
    energy consumption during production, waste
    generation, and paper consumption.

7
ISO 14001 continued
  • For these activities, set up numerical targets.
The entire Group periodically evaluates how well
these targets are being achieved, and evaluation
results are fed back to relevant entities to
    ensure continuous improvement.
  • Additionally, at least once a year conduct
internal environmental audits based on unified
criteria, to ensure that the Group's
environmental policy, objectives and targets are
properly known to all organizations, and that the
management system is functioning efficiently, by
identifying any problems and making necessary
improvements. In these internal audits, in
    addition to management system checking,
    compliance audits are performed using
environmental checklists, to ensure that all
Group organizations are fully compliant with laws
    and regulations.
  • By making the maximum use of this integrated
management system, work to ensure compliance,
fulfilling its social responsibility by helping
resolve urgent environmental issues relating to
global warming and zero waste, and by reducing
    environmental risks.

8
Products
  • As one of the worlds most respected
    technology innovators, helping customers speed
the flow of information and expand the scope of
digital imaging. In both manufacturing and
    product performance, strive to maximize
    efficiency and minimize environmental impact.
Here are some of the many ways products save
energy, reduce waste and promote recycling.

9
Toner Recycling system
  • Original Toner Recycling System collects,
recycles, and re-uses toner that is not
transferred to the paper during the printing
process in MFPs. This results in saving 20 of
the toner from going to waste.

10
Power only where you need it
  • In operation, optimize power consumption for each
operating mode -- controlling the flow of power
to save energy wherever possible. For example,
when you print from a PC or receives a fax, the
power supply is adjusted so that no electricity
is sent to the scanner or to other idle sections
    of the product.

11
100 Duplex Capability
  • 100 Duplex Capability. Another way that to
    protect
  • the environment is by offering maximum efficiency
    in paper consumption. In
  • providing standard or optional duplex
capabilities. Users have the ability to print
  • quickly and efficiently on both sides of each
    sheet
  • without compromising output speed.
  • With100 duplex productivity, copiers can
    produce two-sided
  • copies and prints at full rated output speed to
    maintain high productivity while
  • saving paper.

12
Designed with recycling in mind
  • Plastic parts are made of recycled materials
    where possible.
  • All plastic parts are marked to indicate the type
    of resin used.
  • Labels that leave no adhesive residue are used.
  • To simplify recycling, parts are designed so that
they can be disassembled by a single person
    without special tools.

13
Toner Bottle Recycling
  • Toner bottles should be made of HDPE, or High
Density Polyethylene -- identified by the Society
of the Plastics Industry (SPI) as one of the two
types of plastics that can be recycled most
economically. These toner bottles are designed
to be collected and recycled at local facilities,
reducing fuel and gas required by shipping.

14
Chemical Substance Control
  • MFPs should contain none of the hazardous
substances listed in the European Union's RoHS
    Directive.
  • (These include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent
    chromium, polybrominated biphenyls PBBs, and
    polybrominated diphenyl ethers PBDEs.)

15
Outer Casing Plastics
  • The outer casing partsof MFPs should be made
from the same two types of plastic, creating a
    closed material-recycling loop for recycling
plastics from end-of-life MFPs and incorporating
them into the production of newer models. With
this process, we have enabled the recycling of
high purity plastics, recycling approximately 100
    tons of plastics annually

16
Recycling Plastics and Packaging Materials
  • To recycle and re-use as many materials as
possible, we use the same two types of plastic in
    outer casing parts for MFPs.
  • Recycling facilities should be equipped with
crushers and mechanisms that remove foreign
matter to support this process, resulting in the
recycling of 100 tons of plastic each year.
  • Manufactures need to focuse on reducing and
    recycling packaging materials

17
Policy
  • Industry should participate in a wide range of
manufacturing and procurement programs to protect
the environment -- and products must meet many
    eco-friendly international certification
standards for energy conservation and recycling.

18
Reducing CO2 Emissions
  • Industry needs to set target goals for CO2
emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of our
    products -- including manufacturing,
distribution, operation and disposal. The goal
must be least be 20 reduction in CO2 emissions
    by the year 2010.

19
Restricting Hazardous Substances
  • In July, 2006, the Restriction of Hazardous
Substances Directive (RoHS) came into effect in
the European market to restrict the use of lead,
cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium and two
types of polybromic fire retardants (PBB and
BPDE). As of March, 2008, industry should have
phased out these substances in all MFPs and
    printers.

20
Meeting Level 2 Zero Emission Standards
  • In all manufacturing facilities, Industry should
follow a strict program to minimize the volume of
    externally disposed waste. Manufacturing sites
should have already met Level 1 criteria,
including resource recovery rate over 90 with
less than 5 final disposal rate.

21
Clean Planet Program
  • Clean Planet Program
  • Initiative to collect and recycle used toner
    cartridges
  • Voluntary program offers free return of used
    toner
  • Return shipping label included in each toner box
    or available online
  • Over 2,000,000 consumables collected to date
    (U.S. Puerto Rico)
  • Cartridges refurbished to new condition and
    reused
  • Parts recycled from cartridges
  • Cartridges disposed of through approved methods

22
Energy Star Program
  • New guidelines were introduced in 2007, making it
more difficult for copiers, printers and
multifunctional devices to earn Energy Star
labels it is critical that all imaging devices
    continue to achieve this certification.

23
Other Environmental Labeling Programs
  • Eco-Mark certification that a product has low
environmental impact as recognized by the Japan
    Environmental Association.
  • International Energy Star this program,
implemented under a joint U.S.-Japan agreement,
uses the Energy Star mark to label energy-saving
OA equipment that meets its guidelines.
  • Blue Angel the worlds first environmental-protec
tion label, introduced in Germany in 1978,
certifies that products and services have low
    environmental impact.
  • EcoLeaf a program that quantitatively identifies
and discloses the environmental impact of
    products throughout their lifecycle.

24
Recycled Paper
  • In an effort to further promote environmental
    conservation, Konica Minolta is constantly
certifying specific brands of recycled papers for
our bizhub MFPs, magicolor and PagePro printers.
  • Please consult the public website for whatever
Vendor you have and find a list of approved and
    tested recycled papers.

25
100 Post Consumer Recycled Paper Certification

26
People
  • The Goal of Zero Waste.
  • Along with working to meet Level 2 and Level 3
    criteria for reducing waste
  • and recovering resources, people are saving
    paper,
  • preserving energy and minimizing environmental
    impact in their daily
  • business activities. When you do dispose of
    office waste, disposal
  • contractors must meet strict environmental
    criteria that include
  • information about disposal practices,
    environmental technologies, and
  • compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Everyone should be aware of corporate
    environmental-protection
  • goals and everyone needs to work together to
    reduce, recycle and preserve.

27
Environmental Protection a Team Effort
  • As part of Japans commitment to the Kyoto
    Protocol environment-protection effort, a
  • national campaign was launched to cut greenhouse
    gas emissions by 6.
  • As of June, 2008, over 21,000 businesses and
    civil groups
  • with more than 2,302,000 individuals have become
    members of Team Minus 6
  • performing actions such as turning down air
    conditioners and thermostats, turning off
  • faucets, unplugging appliances when not in use,
    driving cars more efficiently,
  • Choosing eco-friendly products and saying no to
    excessive packaging. As
  • their effects grow, we are committed to helping
    spread these activities
  • throughout the world.

28
Global Activities
  • As a global technology leaders, Industry needs to
be dedicated to protecting the environment
  • in many countries.
  • Environmental efforts are summarized in regular
    publications and websites, including
  • the Corporate Social Responsibility report issued
    each year. This comprehensive report
  • covers management philosophy, energy-saving
    technology innovations, product
  • safety enhancements, emission-reduction programs,
    recycling initiatives, social
  • welfare programs and many other CSR activities.
  • In addition, site reports are also published to
    provide detailed environmental information
  • about our business and manufacturing sites in
    Japan. Industry provides environmental
  • information at trade exhibitions and contribute
to environmental education throughout the world.

29
Energy Saving Printing Tips
  • Most products can be automatically programmed to
save paper and enter Power Saving modes. Here
are a few of our recommended printing tips
  • Setting print drivers to Auto Duplex default.
  • Setting each device to Auto Duplex default via
    its control panel or
  • administrative software.
  • Shifting each device to Power Save Setting
    after a selected interval.
  • Printing presentation handouts and other
documents at least 2 UP to combine
  • several slides on one page.

30
Energy Saving Printing Tips cont.
  • Using Proof Copy to verify that printing and
finishing parameters are correct before making
    full print runs.
  • Using energy-saving mode settings on MFPs outside
    of normal business hours.
  • Printing to devices that are energy efficient,
productive, and cost-effective -- even if this
means expanding internal energy while walking
away from our desks to use centrally located
    devices.
  • Consolidating imaging devices with one centrally
located MFP that uses less energy.
