SNS Background

• Recognised need to improve the availability and
  use of small area statistics to support policy
  development and monitoring at national and local
  level
• In Scotland SNS funded through Spending Reviews
  2M per annum since 2002 (under spend in early
  years)
• OCS working with all SE Analytical Services
  Divisions, and other organisations

What has SNS delivered?

• Stable small area geographies developed and being
  used extensively data zones
• Range of data developed - still some gaps
• Internet based collection / dissemination systems
  - improving efficiency collect once use many
  times
• Analysis Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation
• Social Focus on Deprived Areas

How is SNS being used?

• Evidence for supporting debate and monitoring
  impact of polices Closing the Opportunity Gap
  Regeneration Outcome Agreements,
• Evidence for funding Community Regeneration
  Fund others (e.g. use of data zones and SNS
  indicators being explored by NRAC)
• Extensive use outwith Scottish Executive by
  Planning Partnerships
• 500K page views in first year (Jul04-05)
• 300 user requests for SNS Geography CDs
• 70 user requests for SNS Data CDs
• Almost 1,000 attended SIMD/SNS Community road
  shows

SNS developments over coming months

• Let contract to develop SNS Internet site - Jan06
• SNS is good for those who want to do analysis,
  selecting the areas of interest, selecting from
  hundreds of indicators and viewing results in
  maps, etc
• Need to improve SNS internet site in terms of
• Standard reports basic reports at present
  reports will be more like constituency profiles
  but driven from underlying data base
• Bulk downloads to replace CDs
• Better metadata to allow users to understand what
  they can and cant do with data
• Better interoperability between SNS and other
  internet sites
• Task group to develop core set of socio economic
  indicators for small areas Jan-July06
• Standard reports through internet site to support
  monitoring of ROAs by July06
• SIMD 2006 to be released in Oct06 plans to add
  new crime and physical environment domains
