Title: Factors that effect the rate of the reaction

1
Factors that effect the rate of the reaction
2
Factors that effect rate
  • We will discuss four factors that effect the rate
    of reaction
  • Concentration
  • Temperature
  • Surface area
  • Catalysts

3
Concentration
  • High concentration of the reactants leads to more
    effective collisions per unit time
  • This leads to an increasing reaction rate
  • High concentration of products tends to have
    lower rate

4
Temperature
  • Higher temperature implies higher average kinetic
    energy of molecules
  • When the temperature is increased the molecules
    start to move faster
  • General rule(most) reaction will approximately
    double for every 10C increase
  • Note once reaction reaches a certain temperature
some species may be altered and rate will slow or
    stop.

5
Surface area
  • Increasing surface area of reactants results in a
higher number of reaction sites which increases
    the number of collisions
  • Increases the rate of reaction
  • Example crushing up a solid into powder before
    reaction

6
Catalyst
  • Catalyst is something that speeds up the rate but
is not consumed in the reaction
  • Adding a catalyst produces an alternative pathway
or mechanism for the reaction to occur

The alternate route has a lower activation energy
for reaction, so when collisions happen they are
more successful
