Title: POSSIBILITIES OF BALTIC PORTS IN COOPERATION WITH TRANSCONTINENTAL CONTAINER SHIPPING LINES

1
POSSIBILITIES OF BALTIC PORTS IN CO-OPERATION
WITH TRANSCONTINENTAL CONTAINER SHIPPING LINES
  • V. Paulauskas, D. Paulauskas
  • Klaipeda University

2
Introduction
  • The transportation of packed cargo is very
    important
  • Container and inter modal transportation is very
important in production chains and has a great
    future
  • The transportation of containers in the Baltic
Sea and the whole World is changing

3
Tendencies of container transportation
  • During the last 15 - 20 years container
transportation by sea increasing up to 8 12
    every year
  • In case of increased containers quantity for one
    ship, are decreased transportation costs
  • More than 1500 container ships, which work on
    transcontinental container shipping lines, have
capacity from 2500 TEU up to 4000 TEU
  • The main dimensions of these container ships are
next length up to 220 250 m width up to 26
    28 m draft up to 8,5 11,5 m (full capacity)

4
Conteiner transportation by sea in 1986 2004
year.
5
Possible container market in the Baltic sea
region
  • In 2004 via the Baltic Sea ports were
    transported about 4 million TEU.
  • New inter modal transportation situation partly
    changed container transportation
  • Inter modal transportation pushes out container
    transportation in one continent.
  • Triangle South East Asia, North America, Europe
    production chains

6
Container distribution in the Baltic sea
Countries ports in 2004 year
7
Containers distrubution in the East Baltic ports
in 2004
8
Analysis of the container flow
  • container flow in Europe region
  • container flow in transcontinental
    transportation
  • about 50 of containers, which were transported
via the East Baltic ports are transcontinental
    containers
  • in 2010, the total number of containers in the
East Baltic ports will be about 2,2 2,4 million
TEU and more than 1,2 million TEU will be
    transcontinental containers

9
3 4 CONTAINER SHIPS GENERATION
  • More than 1000 container ships, which work on
    transcontinental container lines, have capacity
from 2500 up to 3000 TEU
  • Big portion of container ships, which capacity
2500 3000 TEU work on lines between West Europe
    and North America
  • Big number of the East Baltic ports are ready
work with 2500 3000 TEU container ships

10
Baltic Sea ports container terminals for the big
container ships
  • Klaipeda (terminal will be ready in 2005)
  • Ventspils
  • Riga
  • Gdynia
  • Tallinn
  • St.-Petersburg
  • Geteborg
  • Arhus and others ports.

11
Big containers ships entry in Baltic Sea ports
economical conditions
  • Baltic Sea ports are transported about 4 million
    TEU per year
  • Container flows have grown up about 15 per
    year
  • about 45 55 of them are transcontinental
    containers
  • After 6 7 years it is possible to make
prognoses for about 3,2 3,5 million TEU
    transcontinental containers per year.

12
East Baltic ports hinterland
  • Extends from the East Baltic sea coast up to
    Ural
  • Including North Ukraine
  • Partly Middle Asia Countries
  • Fare East Countries
  • Transcontinental containers in East Baltic ports
in 2010 could be about 1,4 1,6 million TEU

13
For container ship is economically reasonable
entry in port
  • If loading in one port about 300 400
    containers
  • Ports dues are reasonable
  • Stevedoring tariffs are optimal
  • Terminal equipment are good enough for concrete
ship (at least 70 80 movements per hour)
  • Terminal operator is enough qualified and
    flexible.

14
Klaipeda port (as example), where in 2004 were
handled 174000 TEU
  • About 85000 TEU were transcontinental containers
  • In average, every week were handled about 1600
    TEU of the transcontinental containers
  • It is enough for 3 - 4 container ships per week

15
East Baltic ports transcontinental container
flows
  • About 10000 - 11000 TEU per week
  • East Baltic ports can supply with the necessary
quantity of containers at least two three 3 4
generation container ships per week (from
    economical point of view).

16
Feeder ships in the East Baltic ports
disadvantages
  • Increase transportation costs in average 300
    400 EUR per TEU
  • Increase about 15 30 EUR per one tone of cargo
  • Increase time of delivery about 3 5 days.

17
Conclusions 1
  • 1. Container transportation by sea is increasing
in the World up to 8 12 every year.
  • 2. On one continent, especially in Europe, North
America, where are good road and Ro-Ro shipping
lines network, container transportation are on
one level (not increasing), because containers
are moved out by inter modal transportation.
  • 3. One of the more intensive developing regions
in Europe is the Baltic Sea region, where
container transportation increased up to 15 20
per year, and this region have good
perspectives for the container transportation in
    the future.
  • 4. A big part of the Baltic ports have
possibilities operate with container ships of the
    3 4 generation.

18
Conclusions 2
  • 5. Now just the East Baltic ports, can supply 3
4 transcontinental container ships per week and
now it is necessary to start preparing for such
    transportation.
  • 6. For the preparation and moving of
transcontinental container ships into the East
Baltic Sea ports it is necessary to co-operate
between ports, and it is very important, that the
nearest 10 12 years the East Baltic ports will
be partners in this mater, but not competitors.
  • 7. Transcontinental container lines in the East
Baltic ports can assist to activate economics in
    the East Baltic ports hinterland.
