Please follow these directions.
  • Take out a sheet of paper and list three people
    that are important in your life.
  • On that same sheet of paper, write down three
    places that you enjoy visiting.
  • 3. Now, please open your desk and pull out
    three items of your choice. Set them on top of
    your desk and wait quietly for more directions.

Lets list some of the items that you chose under
three categories on the chalkboard.

  • All of the items that you listed in this chart
    are called NOUNS.

Noun Practice
  • A noun is a word that names a person, place, or
    thing.
  • Do each of these words represent a person, place,
    or thing?
  • 1. police officer 6. the gas station
  • 2. McDonalds 7. grandma
  • 3. skateboard 8. pencil
  • 4. desk 9. Toys R Us
  • 5. President Bush 10. volleyball

Now, lets pick out the nouns in the following
sentences.
  • We have a basketball in our classroom.
  • I ate at Hardees yesterday.
  • Today, I will play volleyball with my grandpa.
  • I lost my pencil in my desk.
  • Mr. Johnson and Mrs. Smith are teachers.
  • I bought Monopoly at Wal-Mart.
  • Where are my favorite shoes?
  • Do you see the bank?

Common and Proper Nouns
  • There are two different types of nouns.
  • A common noun is a noun that names a general
    class of people, places, or things.
  • Example pen, chair, table, the park, grandpa
  • Common nouns start with lower case letters.
  • A proper noun is a noun that names a particular
    person, place, or thing.
  • Example Mrs. Smith, Toys R Us, Hardees,
    Illinois, Berkots Food Store
  • Proper nouns start with upper case letters.
