Hardware and Software Compatibility
  • What is an HCL system?
  • Tested by WHQL
  • HCL published online
  • Why is it important?
  • Guaranteed compatibility
  • Increased customer satisfaction
  • Lower support costs
  • Software compatibility
  • Q313484 and Q319580, Windows XP Application
    Compatibility Update
  • Q301911, How to Use the Program Compatibility
    Wizard in Windows XP

Upgrade Advisor
  • Creates a report of hardware and software issues
  • Can be downloaded from
  • http//www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy
    /upgrading/advisor.asp
  • winnt32 /checkupgradeonly
  • Can be used with Dynamic Update

7
System BIOS Requirements
  • Operating system independent code
  • Allows operating system to communicate with
    devices
  • Code necessary to start computer
  • Power-on self test (POST)
  • Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)
  • Industry standard version 1.1
  • Allows the operating system to control power
management and Plug and Play features
  • Non-ACPI Plug and Play
  • Advanced Power Management (APM)
  • Legacy Plug and Play

8
Upgrade Paths
9
Upgrade vs. Clean Installation
  • Choose a clean installation when
  • No operating system is installed
  • The installed operating system does not support
    an upgrade to Windows XP
  • The computer has more than one partition and
needs to support a multiple-boot configuration
  • A clean installation is preferred

10
Planning Partitions and File Systems
  • Partitioning
  • Use existing partition
  • Create new partition from free space
  • Delete partitions to create free space
  • Dual boot
  • Install Windows XP to a separate partition
  • File systems
  • Support for NTFS, FAT16, and FAT32
  • NTFS recommended
  • More secure
  • More scalable

11
Starting Setup
  • Autorun from the CD
  • Runs Winnt32.exe
  • Check upgrade compatibility
  • Scriptable unattended setup
  • Can copy files from multiple sources
  • Booting from the CD
  • Running Winnt.exe from MS-DOS client
  • 16-bit executable
  • Clean installations only
  • It is slow and needs more temporary disk space
  • Should load Smartdrv.exe

12
Windows 98, Windows Me Upgrade
  • Launching upgrade
  • Autorun.inf loads Setup.exe
  • Considerations
  • Drivers (VxD)
  • Applications (upgrade compatibility report)
  • Limitations
  • Some Windows 98 and Windows Me features may not
    be supported
  • Hardware compatibility
  • Multiple monitor support
  • Consult HCL

13
Windows 98/Me Upgrade Process
  • Special process used when upgrading Windows 98/Me
  • Winnt32 mode
  • Creates upgrade report
  • Scans current system for user accounts
  • Creates new boot environment
  • Text mode
  • Captures uninstallation information
  • Create a clean installation after first reboot
    of Winnt32
  • GUI mode
  • Finish clean installation process
  • Migrate save registry to new installation
  • Execute application migration
  • Migrate user accounts
  • First post-setup boot
  • OOBE
  • Welcome screen

Winnt32.exe command option /checkupgradeonly can
be used to create the upgrade report without
installing the operating system.
14
Dynamic Update
  • Performed when starting setup from within
operating system using Winnt32 or Winnt32
    /checkupgradeonly
  • New installation or upgrade
  • Requires Internet Explorer 4.0 or later

15
Setup Process
  • Collecting information
  • Product key
  • Language settings
  • Upgrade or new installation
  • Dynamic Update
  • Check for updated drivers
  • Preparing installation
  • When booting from CD
  • Option to repair
  • Create and format partitions
  • Copy files to hard disk

16
Setup Process (2)
  • Installing Windows
  • Installs drivers and devices
  • Set locale and keyboard
  • Prompt for name and organization
  • Finalizing installation
  • Saves settings
  • Removes temporary files
  • Restarts computer
  • First startup after setup
  • Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE) displays welcome
    screen

17
Windows Welcome Also Known as Out-of-Box
Experience (OOBE)
  • Before first logon
  • Do not see if display is less than 800?600
  • Do see if joining a domain
  • Create user accounts
  • Activate
  • Register

18
Steps with Data Before Setup
  • Full backup of data
  • Files and Settings Transfer Wizard (FSTW) also
called User State Migration Tool (USMT)
  • Download Windows XP drivers
  • Create a Windows 98 or Windows Me boot floppy
    disk
  • Uninstall any suspect application
  • Remove temporary files

19
Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
