covered
  • Assessing your individual professional
    development needs, readiness and commitment.
  • Assessing district, school, or department needs
    and linking professional development to
    improvement objectives.
  • Creating a draft of your Professional Growth Plan
    (PGP).

STEP 4 Consultation with the Superintendent/Desi
gnee or NJASA
  • Purpose To review and improve your PGP with the
    person who will certify it.
  • Big Idea
  • This is your opportunity to work together 11 to
    assure that the PGP is well articulated and is a
    project that will make a significant difference
    in the quality of leadership and
    school/department performance.

Considerations for the administrator who is
preparing a plan
  • Make an appointment.
  • 2. Complete your self-assessment, the linkage to
    school/district needs, and your draft PGP.
  • 3. Prepare your questions.
  • 4. Anticipate his/her questions.
  • 5. Be open to suggestions.
  • Listen carefully and incorporate valuable
  • Suggestions.

Considerations for the consulting
Superintendent/designee
  1. Provide adequate uninterrupted time.
  2. Be a colleague and consultant.
  3. Be prepared.
  4. Expect a copy.
  5. Ask clarifying questions and probing questions.
  6. Answer the presenters questions and make
    suggestions.
  7. Be appreciative.
  8. End with a summary.

STEP 5 Forming Your Peer Review
CommitteePurpose To identify Peer Review
Committee (PRC) members who will work with the
administrator to provide guidance, feedback, and
support of his/her PGP.
  • Big Idea
  • This is an opportunity to create a partnership
    with colleagues who will not only help you to
    plan and complete your PGP, but will also support
    your ongoing success as a school leader.

Considerations for the administrator who is
preparing a plan
  • Think carefully.
  • Seek out people with expertise.
  • Consider only people who you trust.
  • Choose people who are collaborative and care
    about the process.
  • Select good thinkers and effective communicators.
  • Choose people who are willing to give the time.
  • Think about the benefits of someone from your own
    district vs. someone from outside your district.
  • Remember, you must select at least 3 certified
    administrators.

Considerations for anyone asked to be a member of
a PRC
  1. Be sure you are supportive.
  2. Dont stretch yourself too thin.
  3. Be sure you can meet the time and place
    requirements.
  4. Be able to be honest, and collaborative.
  5. Be willing to sustain your commitment.

    PRC for each of its members.

STEP 6 Convene and Structure Your Peer Review
CommitteePurpose To work with your PRC to
improve and polish your plan and to establish
procedures for ongoing support.
  • Big Idea
  • You want to establish the groundwork for
    improving your PGP and for having a group of
    colleagues that you can turn to for ongoing
  • support.

  1. Set up initial meeting.
  2. Prepare your questions.
  3. Bring copies of your plan for each PRC member.
  4. Present your plan.
  5. Be open-minded about questions and suggestions.
  6. Take notes.
  7. Summarize what you have learned.
  8. Decide on details of future work together.
  9. Incorporate the valuable suggestions into your
    final plan.
  10. Submit your plan for certification.

  1. Follow agreed upon procedures such as the Tuning
    Protocol
  2. Listen carefully to the presentation
  3. When its time, ask clarifying and probing
    questions
  4. Be constructively critical.
  5. Identify what you like about the plan
  6. Make suggestions for improvements.

  • Provide additional feedback and ongoing support
    related to the department and implementation of
    your plan.
  • Review progress toward attainment of your
    professional development goals.
  • Determine compliance with state standards and
    established guidelines.
  • Support each other throughout the PGP process.

  1. Is it specific?
  2. Is it testable?
  3. Is it in your control?
  4. Is it ecological?

EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
  1. Wait time (reflection, thinking).
  2. Paraphrasing (to check for understanding).
  3. Reframing (to shift from a negative point of view
    to a positive point of view).
  4. Avoiding negative presuppositions.
  5. Clarifying and specifying.

  • A protocol is simply an agreed upon structure,
    process, and guidelines for a conversation that
    allows it to happen in a mutually respectful,
    in-depth, and efficient manner. Protocols create
    safety for both the presenter and the consultants
    and encourage everyone to stay on focus and
  • to use time productively. Feel free to adjust
    the times to fit your schedule.
