Title: Bloom

1
Blooms Taxonomy
2
Exercise your brain!
  • Your brain, like your muscles, needs to be
exercised. You do this by thinking harder, and at
    higher levels.

3
Levels of Thinking
  • Benjamin Bloom, a psychologist, identified the
kinds of thinking humans do. He created a
TAXONOMY (a classification) of the different
levels of thinking our brains can engage in.

4
The Taxonomy
  • Blooms Taxonomy is HIERARCHICAL (ranked),
starting with basic thinking and going up to
advanced critical thinking. But its important to
know that you cant get to the higher levels
without the lower levels supporting you. Think of
it as a ladder, or as steps.

5
Knowledge
  • The first level deals with just the facts, maam.
    Knowledge is what you know.

6
Comprehension
  • The next level deals with understanding what you
    know.

7
Application
  • Application is being able to apply what you know.

8
Analysis
  • Analysis is taking what you know, understand, and
can use, and breaking it down into parts. When
you analyze something, youre not only figuring
out how to use it, youre figuring out the best
    way to use it.

9
Synthesis
  • Synthesis is creating something that wasnt there
before. It means having an idea that no one else
    has had.

10
Evaluation
  • Evaluation is judging something, criticizing
something or reviewing something according to
    some set of criteria.
  • This is the highest level of Blooms Taxonomy,
because you cant get here without all of the
    other levels supporting you.

11
For the purposes of this class, were going to
divide the taxonomy into 3 levels
1. Facts and Evidence (Knowledge, Comprehension)
2. Interpretation and Inference (Analysis)
3. Evaluation (Synthesis and Evaluation)
12
Facts and Evidence
  • Are what you can see in the text what you KNOW,
what you can actually, physically, put your
    finger on.

13
Interpretation and Inference
  • Is your analysis of the facts you have to use
your brain, and what the text says.

14
Evaluation
  • Is what it all means its your thesis statement,
how the text applies to the world, what you think
a story or book is really about.

15
So, to summarize
  • There are different levels of critical thinking.
  • Some levels are higher on the taxonomy than
    others.
  • And we use all of these levels when we read and
    write.

16
The whole point is
  • To give your brain a workout,

and to make you a stronger thinker (and writer
and reader)
so that your brain can grow and look like this
17
and not like this
