1
Cell Phone/Wireless Industry
  • Travis Evans
  • Stephen Demkowski
  • Stephanie Sorrentino
  • Wayne Prokop
  • Katherine Costello

2
Introduction
  • We are going to observe the wireless phone
industry to understand the context of the firms.
  • We will also examine the financial data,
customers, technology, and markets of the firms
to paint you a picture of rapid technology change
    and growth.

3
Cellular Phone Industry
4
History of Wireless Phones
  • Wireless communication essentially began around
100 years ago, when Guglielmo Marconi received a
Morse code signal sent from across the Atlantic
Ocean, providing that radio waves do not travel
in a straight line, but move with the curve of
    the Earth.

5
Advancements in Wireless Technology
  • Wireless phones use radio waves to transmit a
signal from a phone to a low-power transmission
tower which then directs the signal to the
    destination
  • Radio waves travel at a certain frequency along
the band in the electromagnetic spectrum that is
used to transmit audio, video and data
    communications.

6
The Digital Age
  • Digital technologies have now been developed
using the same theory of cells, but allowing more
simultaneous users by compressing the data, and
more effectively using the available radio
    frequency.

7
Cellular Towers
  • Originally there might have been only one tower
    per city allowing limited usage.
  • Now there are several towers towers dividing
areas into small cells to allow for many
concurrent users on an analog network.

8
Number of Subscribers for 2002
9
Cellular Firms Market share
10
Cellular Firms
  • Currently there are approximately 3,132 wireless
service providers operating in the U.S.

11
Revenues Per Year and Per Subscriber
12
Revenues Per Subscriber
  • It appears that the revenue per subscriber has
stayed fairly consistent for the top five
    companies

13
Conclusion
  • Hopefully we have gotten you to better understand
the Wireless industry and how it works, competes,
    and stays afloat.
  • We thank you for your time.
