Title: THE UNIVERSITIES AT SHADY GROVE

1
THE UNIVERSITIES AT SHADY GROVE
  • Creating A Sustainable Campus

2
SHADY GROVE III
  • Designed to be a green building
  • Anticipated gold LEED certification by the US
    Green Building Council
  • Completed by August 2007

3
What is sustainability?
  • "Meeting the needs of the
  • present without compromising
  • the ability of future generations
  • to meet their own needs.
  • World Commission on Environment and Development,
    1987

4
Sustainable Development
  • Characteristics of a sustainable campus 1.
Improve economic efficiency 2. Protect and
restore ecological systems 3. Enhance the
    well-being of all peoples

5
SG III Expanding our role in the community
  • A resource on green building design
  • An educational tool for schools and businesses
  • Expanded outreach with other green projects
    regionally
  • Supporting sustainability in campus development

6
Green Features at SG III
  • Green Roofs
  • Water Conservation
  • Native Plant Species
  • Energy Efficient Building Systems
  • Recycling Program
  • Use of Sustainable/Recycled Materials
  • Use of Non-Toxic Chemicals

7
1. Green Roof
  • What is a green roof?
  • A green roof consists of vegetation and soil, or
a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing
    membrane.
  • Additional layers, such as a root barrier and
drainage and irrigation systems, may also be
    included.

8
Details of a Green Roof
9
Green Roofs
10
Benefits of a Green Roof
  • Energy Conservation plants insulate buildings
  • Improved Air Quality reduce smog, filter
    pollutants
  • Improved Water Quality reduce storm water
    runoff
  • Noise Reduction provide acoustic insulation
  • Urban Oasis - plants provide habitat for birds

11
Green Roof
12
2. Water Conservation
  • All of our storm water runoff drains directly to
    the Chesapeake Bay.

13
Water Conservation
  • SG III will benefit water quality by
  • Landscaping and new gardens
  • Installing dual-flush toilets
  • Filtering rainwater on green roof
  • Using non-toxic cleaners and pesticides
  • Parking lot with filtration system

14
3. Native Plant Species
  • SG III will landscape all undeveloped areas with
    native plant species.

15
Why Use Native Plants?
  • Native plants
  • Have adapted to local soil, rainfall and
    temperature.
  • Have natural defenses to many insects and
    diseases.
  • Thrive in their native environments and require
    little care.
  • Require minimal use of water, fertilizers, and
    pesticides.
  • Provide a good habitat for native wildlife
    species.

16
4. Energy Efficient Systems
  • SG III has installed boilers and generators that
    optimize energy performance.
  • The Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning
    Equipment meets EPA-set standards.

17
Energy Conservation
  • SG III will install a digital monitor in the
lobby to display energy savings throughout the
    building.

18
Energy Conservation
  • SG III supports energy savings in transportation
  • Carpool parking
  • Electric car fueling areas
  • Bike racks
  • Online carpool assistance
  • Easy access to metro and bus

19
5. Recycling Program
  • USG has a comprehensive recycling program on
    campus.
  • Receptacles throughout for paper, cans, plastic
  • Special collection for batteries, cell phones
  • Annual community recycling day

20
6. Use of Sustainable Recyclable Materials
21
Materials and Resources
  • Many materials used in the construction of SG III
    contain recycled product.

22
Recycled Materials
  • 25 of the building products were made from
    recycled materials
  • Insulation
  • Furniture with scrap aluminum
  • Stair tread from tires
  • Recycled glass in atrium tiles
  • Exterior blue panels

23
Use of Sustainable Materials
  • SG III also contains many materials that are
    considered sustainable because they grow
rapidly and have a low-impact at harvest.

24
Sustainable Materials
  • Sustainable Materials at USG III include
  • Wheat board for wall coverings
  • Banana fiber tables
  • Linoleum from flax/linseed
  • Cork walls
  • Bamboo floors
  • Wooden furniture certified by the Forest
    Stewardship Council

25
Construction Materials at SG III
  • Used a minimum of 50 wood-based materials and
products certified in accordance with the Forest
    Stewardship Councils Principles.

26
Construction Materials at SG III
  • Used in
  • Structural framing and general dimensional
    framing
  • Flooring
  • Finishes
  • Furnishings
  • Temporary construction applications such as
    bracing, concrete formwork and pedestrian
    barriers

27
7. Indoor Air Quality
  • SG III promotes a safe and healthy indoor
environment for students, faculty and visitors
  • No Smoking Campus
  • Low/Non VOC Materials
  • Furniture is formaldehyde-free
  • Non-toxic chemicals for housekeeping

28
Low/Non VOC Materials
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other
hazardous chemicals are contained in many
construction materials and furnishings but not
    at SG III.

29
Indoor Air Quality
  • SG III used low-VOC or green chemicals for
  • Paints
  • Adhesives
  • Solvents
  • Cleaning Agents
  • Carpets
  • Sealants
  • Wood products
  • Cleaning products

30
