9The U.S. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change Scientists warn usWe are running out of
water for EVERYDAY use. How we will secure
drinking water for emergencies?
10Not In MY Back Yard?
- Roger Pulwarty, one of the federal governments
top drought scientists, warns that States such
as Arizona and Colorado, which already fight over
the Colorado River basin water, will step up
legal skirmishes. They may look to the Great
Lakes, but water availability there has already
been limited by the recent Great Lakes Compact
legislation. - Reduced snow melt supplying Sacramento Valley in
California means that by 2020 there wont be
enough water to meet the daily needs of the
community, Pulwarty has stated. - Rising sea levels will make storm surge the No.
1 vulnerability for the metropolitan East Coast,
according to Cynthia Rosenzweig of NASA. - By 2012, over 10 percent of the water needs in
urban Texas areas will not be met during times of
water shortages in El Paso and San Antonio. - Albuquerque, NM could run out of water altogether
in 10 to 20 years.
11Consider This
- Although Florida has hundreds of lakes and
wetlands, sits atop enormous underground
aquifers, and receives more than 50 inches of
rainfall a year, it is facing serious water
supply problems. Central Florida will run out of
drinking water in 5 years unless population
growth slows or new water sources are discovered,
AND the areas water management district warns
that its rivers, lakes and streams will dry up
permanently. - In Atlanta, 57 billion to 133 billion gallons of
tainted water flows from paved areas directly
into surface waters each year. - In Kansas, parts of the High Plains aquifer will
be used up within the next 25 years, according to
the Kansas Geological Survey. - In Northeast Kansas, the water shortage is so
severe that state officials are considering
building a pipeline to the Missouri River, but
most of the water in the river is already spoken
for by other users.
12Running Out of Water is a Disaster
- In Idaho, population growth means that the
regions water demand is expected to nearly
double by 2025. The major water supplier to the
Boise area says it will have trouble supplying
water to Southeast Boise within two years. - Parts of six counties bordering Lake Michigan,
one of the worlds largest freshwater sources,
could face serious water shortages within 20
years. - The Chicago area is expected to suffer water
shortfalls by 2020, by which time the area will
have added 1.3 million residents. - In New Jersey, the State Plan, a blueprint for
managing population growth, noted that it needs
to spend 2 million to patch leaks and clean up
contamination in the water system. It could cost
another 3.3 billion to accommodate population
growth during the next 20 years. And by 2040, the
state expects water use to rise by nearly 80
percent.
