• Keep it short

• Who here is already in Cub Scouts? Show me by
  raising your hand.
• You can ask anyone who has their hand up, and
  they will agree that Scouting is so cool and so
  much fun you wont believe how much fun it is!

• Get the Flyer Home (1st 3rd Grade)
• Everyone hold your flyer up in the air
• Now put it down in front of you
• I would like you to fold your flyer in half long
  ways
• Now fold it in half again long ways
• CONGRATULATIONS you have just made your first
  Cub Scout craft you have made a Cub Scout
  sword. Now, this is a VERY SPECIAL sword it is
  not for bonking your buddy or poking your friend.
  It is for one thing and one thing only
  everybody hold your sword up in the air and tuck
  it into your belt or belt loop.

• Get the Flyer Home (4th 5th grade)
• Hold up your flyer in the air
• Now put it down in front of you
• I would like you to fold it in half.
• Now fold it in half two more times (Until it is
  small enough to fit in pocket or sock.)
• Now stick this flyer into your pocket or sock.
• Now, that is where your flyer can stay for the
  rest of the day until you get home from school.
  When you get home from school go straight to the
  refrigerator, open the door and stick your flyer
  into the fridge. THATS RIGHT STICK IT IN THE
  FRIDGE.
• Now, when your Mom or Dad or whoever takes care
  of you gets home, run up to them and say, Mom,
  Dad, there is something COOL in the fridge! Go
  to the refrigerator and get your sword and show
  it to your parents. Tell them, Mom, Dad, this
  really crazy person came to school today and he
  told me that if I come back to school
  (tonight/tomorrow night) I can sign up and be a
  cub scout and have more fun than I have ever had
  before.

Never Fail Den Organization

• Make sure group is divided into dens
• Explain the 4 positions
• Asst. Den Leader, Den Helper, Committee Member,
  Den Leader
• Appoint someone to take notes
• Have them choose who will fill the positions in
  above order, do not explain why
• Say Well be back then leave the room for 5
  minutes
• Come back to the group and ask, Who is the Asst
  Den Leader? and so on, down the list.
• If they arent ready, walk away and let them
  decide
• Dont stand around the Den!
• Ask new Asst. Den Leader to help collect
  applications and fees.
• Make sure the Den has a planned meeting date and
  place.

Yardstick Speech

• Marked Yardstick (with pipe cleaners)
• 3½ Age 7 5½ Age 11
• 9 Age 18 11 Age 22

Look at this yardstick, each ½ represents one
year, 36 represents 72 years represents the
average boys life. At ½ (1 year) he is
cruising the carpet and furniture and getting
into all kinds of stuff he shouldnt. At 3½ he
is seven and in first grade and excited about
school. At 5 ½ hes eleven, and moving on to
middle school. At 9 hes eighteen and
graduating from High School. Your busting your
buttons with pride for him in his cap and gown.
At 11 hes graduating from college and has moved
on to his own life and families. (Ask a few
leaders to come up and mark their ages on the
stick) Id like to go back to the 2 inches
between ages 7 and 11. These 2, (hold your
thumb and index finger at the points with one
hand) or 4 years are key years in your sons
development. Many of his decision making skills,
ethics and morals will be developed and
reinforced during this time.

Yardstick Speech (cont)
A recent study showed that young people who are
close to a caring adult in these early years were
less likely to get into trouble with drugs,
crime, etc. and were more likely to continue in
school. These four years are the years of the
Cub Scout Tiger Cub through Webelos Scout.
(Drop the ruler, but leave your thumb and index
finger 2 apart). In Cub Scouting we need every
family to get involved this much (referring to
your fingers) This much is different for
everybody. Your This much might be as a
committee member, or a den leader for you son.
It might be organizing an outing, handling
popcorn sales, writing the newsletter or
organizing the Blue and Gold Banquet. (Lift the
yardstick) If one person tries to do this much,
the program will surely fail. But if everyone
does this much both you and your son will have
a great scouting experience. In a few minutes we
will be asking you to volunteer to help with the
program. Together we can make your sons
scouting experience a memorable one.

A Boys Eyes

• Id like to be a cub Scout
• (His eyes were warmest hue)
• Id like to learn, and play, and build,
• like Jim and Freddy do.
• I know how to use a hammer,
• I can drive a nail, if I try,
• Im eight years old, Im big and strong,
• and hardly ever cry.
• I gave him the application
• and parent-participation sheet.
• His eyes were filled with sunshine,
• He left on dancing feet.

Do you see your boys eyes As other people
may? How he looks when youre Too Busy, or
just haven't time today? A boy is such a
special gift... Why dont you realize It only
takes a little time To put sunshine in his
eyes. You say, Ill start tomorrow, But
tomorrow is far away, Hes a boy for such a short
time, So wont you start today?
Next day, my friend was back again, A dejected
little lad. I guess Ill skip the Cub
Scouts, His eyes were dark and sad. My mom is
awful busy, She has lots of friends you
see, Shed never have time for a Den, She hardly
has time for me. And dad is always working
... Hes hardly ever there. To give them any more
to do Just wouldnt be quite fair. He handed
back the papers With dignity of eight years, And
smiling bravely, left me. (His eyes were filled
with tears)

Quick Game Ideas

• Animal Trainer
• Cubs stand in a circle around leader. Leader
  names a stunt or movement to be performed by
  everyone (Bark like a dog Walk like an
  elephant, Hop like a kangaroo)
• Balloon Battle Royal
• Tie a balloon on a string to each cubs ankle and
  arranged in a circle. On the signal each cub
  tries to pop other peoples balloon by stepping
  on it. When a cubs balloon is popped, he leaves
  the circle.
• Hoptoad
• Cubs form a circle, standing about 3 feet apart.
  On a signal, they place their hands on their hips
  and stoop down until they are almost sitting on
  their heels. Then they start hopping around the
  circle clockwise, clapping their hands, first in
  front, then in back. They continue to stoop
  while they hop. Any cub who tips over is out.

• Purpose
• Allows pack leadership to observe new parents and
  how they interact
• Provides pack leadership with a prospect list for
  new leadership needed
• Fun icebreaker for parents and boys attending the
  School Night
• Materials
• Generous supply of newspaper
• Several rolls of masking tape

Newspaper Game (cont)

• Starting the game
• Divide new Cubs and adults into den sized groups
  of 6-8 boys. Try to keep grade level boys
  together,r but its okay to mix based on where
  they are seated.
• Explain this game requires the participation of
  everyone, parents and boys.
• Inform them they will be using newspaper and
  masking tape to create a costume of a superhero,
  pirate, astronaut, Indian, football player or
  whatever they decide upon in their small groups.
• Have each small group select one new Cub who will
  display their costume.
• Explain each small group needs to appoint a
  spokesperson who will describe their costume.
• Indicate the explanation is important and will
  help the judges decide the overall winner.
• Tell them they have 5 minutes to complete their
  task and yell GO!

• Observation
• While the groups are making their costumes, pack
  leadership should mingle and pay close attention
  to the activities. You should only observe and
  never participate or help.
• Look for behavior displayed by new parents
  consistent with that of a prospective leader.
• Observe and make notes on such traits as
• Delegation skills
• Ability to get others involved
• Creativity
• Motivation of others
• Positive attitude
• Having fun
• Observe adults who distance themselves from the
  action or assume a negative posture. Consider
  them for other helper positions but not direct
  contact leadership (i.e. DL, DA, CM, CA).
• Observe the spokespersons for each group as they
  present their costume.
• Find out the names of those who display traits
  sought after and plant a seed with them by saying
  You look like you were really having a great
  time with the boys during the game!

• Finishing the game
• After about 4 minutes announce there are 3
  minutes left (this is Cub Scout time).
• After a couple more announce 2 minutes left.
• 1 or 2 minutes later tell the groups to put the
  finishing touches on and prepare for judging.
• Start with the youngest group, ask the
  spokesperson and Cub to come up and describe
  their creation.
• Enthusiastically lead the crowd in applause after
  each presentation.
• Have judges discuss amongst themselves for1-2
  minutes after all the presentations and decide
  all of the costumes were so good they are unable
  to pick a single winner, therefore everyone wins!
• Have pack leadership lead in a big round of
  applause or cheer for all groups and let them
  know in
• Cub Scouting, everyone is a winner!
• Tell the Cub Scouts who were wearing the costumes
  they can wear them home if they like.
• Ask each group to clean up their area.

• Follow-up
• After the School Night meeting has concluded and
  the boys and parents have left, discuss your
  notes and names of prospective leaders you
  identified during the game.
• Hold your Parents Orientation meeting one week
  after this School Night and actively recruit the
  prospective adults using the Parent Orientation
  agenda
