Prescription Drug Use
  • Prescription Drug safety is based on taking the
    drug as intended.
  • The doctor is aware of their patients medical
    history, and knows what other prescription drugs
    that person is taking.
  • The doctor should discuss any side effects,
    interactions with other medications, and whether
    to avoid alcohol

  • Prescription drugs are classified in four
    categories
  • Pain Relievers
  • Tranquilizers
  • Stimulants
  • Sedatives

Safe use of Prescription Drugs
  • Follow the directions on the medication
  • Dont stop taking medication on your own
  • Dont increase or decrease doses without talking
    to your doctor
  • Know the drugs potential interactions with
    alcohol, other prescription drugs and OTC
  • Dont use other peoples prescriptions, and dont
    share yours

Prescription Drug Misuse
  • Misuse occurs mainly among people 12 - 25 years
    old
  • More common among females
  • Most commonly misused prescription drugs
  • Vicodin
  • Ritalin
  • Oxycontin

  • 1 in 5 teenagers have misused prescriptions
  • Pain killers are the most commonly misused drug
  • 34 of Minnesota teens using prescribed Ritalin
    have been approached about selling their drug

Reasons for Misuse among teens
  • Belief that taking prescription drugs is safer
    than using illegal drugs because they have
    legitimate uses
  • Easy access to the drug
  • Easier to take than smoking pot or drinking
    alcohol

  • Pharming - grabbing a handful of pills and taking
    them all at once
  • There are over 800,000 web sites which sell
    prescription drugs on the internet

Vicodin
  • Most commonly prescribed pain reliever
  • High chance of physical dependency
  • Designed to be used for a short period of time.
    (After breaking an arm)

Long term use of Vicodin
  • Can lead to physical dependence - the body adapts
    to the presence of the substance
  • Very low rate of physical dependence in people
    who take vicodin by prescription

Oxycontin
  • Similar to morphine.
  • Is intended to provide up to 12 hours of relief
    from moderate to sever pain
  • Is taken over a long period of time (chronic pain)

Ritalin
  • A stimulant that is prescribed to treat Attention
    Defecate Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Acts to improve attention span and slow down
    hyperactivity
  • People with ADHD do not become addicted to
    Ritalin
  • Ritalin use by someone who does not have ADHD,
    acts as a stimulant

How to Prevent Misuse
  • Dont leave prescriptions in areas like the
    kitchen, or bathroom where anyone can have access
    to them
  • Keep the prescriptions hidden, or out of site of
    others.

Anabolic Steroids
  • Synthetic (man made) substance
  • Body produces steroids naturally
  • Anabolic Steroids are closely related to the male
    sex hormone testosterone

  • Athletes take steroids to enhance performance
  • Taken in combination with a program of muscle
    building exercise and diet, steroids contribute
    to increase in body weight and muscular growth
  • This is not a legal use of steroids for healthy
    people

  • Taken orally or injected
  • Cycling - taking multiple doses over a specific
    period of time. Stop for a period of time than
    starting up again
  • Pyramid 6-12 week program. Began by taking small
    doses, building up to heavier use, and than
    cutting back down to smaller doses

  • Steroids make muscles grow but not the tendons
    and ligaments that connect them.
  • Unnaturally big muscles put extra stress on the
    tendons and ligaments causing injury

  • 11 of boys 2.5 of girls admit to steroid use
  • Teens who abuse steroids run the risk of stunting
    their growth
  • When hormone levels reach a certain point the
    body thinks it has gone through puberty, so the
    bones get the message to stop growing
