The California Condor
  • The California condor is on of the worlds
largest birds. It once lived throughout the
West. But when settlers moved in, there was
little room left for the condor. It now survives
only in zoos. These zoos want to save the
condor. One day, they hope to return to the wild.

Why did the condors habitat disappear?

Mexican Grizzly Bear
  • The Mexican grizzly bear is known for its size,
power, and courage. Because of this, many people
want its fur as a trophy. Tracked down for
sport, few of these bears have survived. Grizzly
bears once lived throughout the American
    Southwest.

The Giant Otter
  • The fur of the giant otter is among the most
beautiful in the world. The otter is easy to
catch because it is curious and unafraid. At one
time giant otters were often seen swimming in
rivers throughout South America. Now, few otters
    are seen.

What caused the giant otter to become endangered?
hunting

Pelicans
  • When chemicals are dumped into a river, many
fish die. The fish that live, carry the poison
in their bodies. The pelican has become
endangered because it eats fish that have been
    poisoned with chemicals.

Why are the pelicans on the endangered species
list?

Habitat destruction
17
Sorry!
  • Hunting has not been the main problem for
    pelicans.

Done

Super choice!
  • Pollution in the water causes the fish to be
poisonous for the pelicans. When the pelicans
eat the fish they get sick and die.

Write pollution on your worksheet for number
four. What can people do to help the pelicans?
Done
19
Nope
  • Habitat destruction is not the reason the
pelicans are on the endangered list.
