Professional Practice
Professional Practice staff develop and manage
over 1,200 undergraduate and graduate internship,
research, and cooperative education placements
each year.

Professional Practice programs support the campus
in various ways including
  • Strengthening UMBCs visibility and reputation
    through the internship and co-op placement of
    undergraduate and graduate students in national
    and regional companies and nonprofit and
    government organizations.
  • Strengthening UMBCs capacity to produce a
    skilled workforce by providing undergraduate and
    graduate students with an opportunity to connect
    theory to practice through applied learning.
  • Providing essential administrative/logistical
    support to faculty and administrative departments
    for the placement and evaluation of UMBC students
    in applied learning opportunities.

Impact on Student Success Undergraduate Students
  • First-time, full-time freshmen engaged in an
    applied learning experience at some point in
    their academic career are retained and graduate
    at a significantly higher rate than students who
    do not engage in a similar experience.
  • 74 of respondents indicate an increase in their
    motivation to continue and persist to graduation
    as a result of their internship/co-op experience
    (student placement evaluations, Fall 2007 through
    Fall 2008 n678).
  • Full-time, first time freshmen who engaged in
    service-learning were significantly more likely
    than those who did not to feel more integrated
    within the campus community on all fronts
    academically, socially with peers, and in
    interactions with faculty.
