  • YA concerns regarding visual nature of their
    world
  • Text issues
  • Author issues
  • Middle
  • Best
  • Gathering YA input

3
Terms
  • Mirror neurons
  • Tactile sensor
  • Cerebral cortex its role in YA developmental
    behaviors
  • Brain influences in YAs

4
Brain issues and YAs
  • Brain cells mirror what seen (mirror neurons).
  • Tactile information processed differently in the
    brain.
  • Humans tend to be very visual. When tactile
intersects with visual, often the tactile will
not equal what is understood visually.
  • Equilibrium point constantly changes
  • Sensing vs signaling
  • The older you get the more you lose this.

5
The teenage brain
  • There are often brain reasons why YAs often react
    the way they do.
  • Difficulty with self control
  • Executive functions of brain often not developed
    in YAs.
  • Exogenous vs endogenous controls
  • Cortex overloading
  • Bad decisions may result from immature prefrontal
    cortex
  • Risky behaviors may result not from rebellion
    only.
  • Distribution of brain workload different in teens
    than adults.
  • Developmental expectations (preening/pruning)

6
Film concerns
  • Visual nature of YAs
  • Internet a place of learning AND playing
  • Computers much more commonplace
  • Connection to literature
  • What is being filmed and based upon what
  • IE Bridge to Terabithia
  • MTV and Amazon.com
  • Both into the business of YA literature
  • Popular culture as reflected in the text
  • Themes and interests

7
Text concerns
  • Tend to suggest titles some good, some ??
  • Tend to give annotations for titles
  • Criticized for giving away too much plot
  • Helpful for beginners
  • Dates really fast!
  • Helpful for YAs?
  • Requires lots of reading to know much of this

8
Author Statements
  • Many in text are from actual authors for YA
    literature
  • Some text comments on genre
  • Some text comments on format
  • Some text comments on topics of interest to YAs
  • Printz 2007 award graphic novel (American Born
    Chinese) by GN Lang- http//www.ala.org/ala/yalsa
    /booklistsawards/printzaward/Printz.htm Deals
with race, culture clashes, sense of self.

9
YA interest in literature
  • YAs need to participate actively in their
    learning
  • For reading
  • For writing
  • For talking
  • YAs need interesting and compelling literature
  • They learn once they are engaged and interested

10
Selecting the best
  • You are not the absolute expert
  • You dont need to be the expert to do this
  • ID helpful collaboratives
  • Lists
  • Adolescents
  • Other possibilities
  • Your ideas may not always be in harmony
  • With lists
  • With others
  • Working at it helps improve your skills

11
Controversies in selecting the best
  • Censorship
  • Budgets
  • Space
  • Uses
  • Audiences

12
YA input/ future ideas
  • Suggestions/recommendations for works to
    acquire/share
  • Questions/referrals
  • Further thoughts on subject
  • Specifics of other things to view/read/use/acquire
  • People/place contacts for more information

13
Integration of YA interests information
  • Relevancy
  • Topical
  • Connections
  • Zinger
  • Relationship
  • Purpose
  • Other

14
A Film for YAs
  • When evaluating a film for YAs consider
  • What criteria makes it YA?
  • Why would this film be appealing to adolescents?
  • How would you recommend it?
  • Who would you recommend it to and why?
  • What connections do you perceive between this
    film and YA read interests?
  • How would you discuss this film with a YA?

15
Readings
  • S. Krashen article Reading is his stuff!
  • YA film There is no list - you choose. Make
the case for this movie and you will be talking
about how it is reflective of what we have been
reading/doing. Reasons are that the level of YA
and the movies out, on screen, on DVD, etc. are
wide ranging. Some students will want to go in
at a less developmentally sophisticated level,
some will not. Some will want cartoon type, some
realistic (present time, people) - again your
    choice.
  • Good tips on booktalking!
  • Another example of how to write a book review at
    website.
  • Each is different
  • Style defined by audience, criteria of reviewing

16
