Pentel, Ph.D., Mark G. LeSage, Ph.D.
Dr. Harriss research involves the use of rodent
models of nicotine self-administration and
withdrawal to study behavioral and
neuropharmacological aspects of tobacco
dependence. He is currently examining whether
severity of nicotine withdrawal is predictive of
aspects of nicotine self-administration.
7
Devon Indig, M.P.H.CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentors Jan Copeland,
Ph.D., Katherine M. Conigrave, M.D.
Ms. Indigs doctoral research seeks to determine
the prevalence and detection of alcohol-related
presentations in the emergency department (ED)
setting. Her methodology involves a triangulation
of data sources including evaluating routine data
sources, patient screening and follow-up surveys,
medical record audits and clinician surveys.
8
Matthew Johnson, Ph.D CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentors Roland
Griffiths, Ph.D., Warren Bickel, Ph.D.
Dr. Johnsons research focus seeks to examine
human research studies with the hallucinogen
psilocybin.  He will present guidelines for safe
human research with hallucinogens, a class of
compounds with a unique safety profile that has
remained largely unstudied in humans for decades.
9
George Kenna, Ph.D, R.Ph. CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentor Robert M.
Swift, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Kennas research examines combining
pharmacotherapies for alcohol dependence, such as
aripiprazole / topiramate, and matching /
mismatching serotonergic medications by
randomizing persons based on their serotonin
transporter. Future interests include
pharmacotherapy of co-occurring substance use
disorders examining the effectiveness of
medications in those diagnosed with co-morbid
mental illness and substance use disorders.
10
Jun-Xi Li, Ph.D CPDD Early Career Investigator
Travel AwardMentor Charles P. France, Ph.D.,
Dr. Lis research examines the behavioral
pharmacology of opioids and serotonergic ligands
in rodents and non-human primates. Various
behavioral techniques including drug
discrimination, antinociception,
schedule-controlled responding and observation
are used to glean the behavioral effects of
opioids, hallucinogens and their mechanisms.
11
Michelle R. Lofwal, MD CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentors Sharon L.
Walsh, Ph.D., Catherine Martin, M.D., Eric C.
Strain, M.D.
Dr. Lofwalls research focus addresses opioid
addiction treatment and rehabilitation and the
role of gender, pain, and stress in opioid use
disorders.
12
James MacKillop, Ph.D CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentors Stephen A.
Lisman, Ph.D., Peter Monti, Ph.D.
Dr. MacKillops research uses behavioral
economics to study alcohol and drug dependence,
focusing on valid measure-ment of a drugs
relative value, understanding craving,
understanding genetic influences, and identifying
promising addiction pharmacotherapies and
characterizing their mechanisms.
13
Krista Lisdahl Medina, Ph.D CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentor Susan F.
Tapert, Ph.D.
Dr. Medina's primary research interests examine
neurocognitive effects of drug use during
adolescence and young adult-hood.  More
specifically, she uses magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI), genotyping, and neuropsychological
evaluations to assess the consequences of ecstasy
(MDMA), nicotine, marijuana, alcohol, or polydrug
use on brain structure, function, mood, and
cognition.
14
Mariana Pereira, Ph.D CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentor Joan I.
Morrell, Ph.D.
Dr. Pereiras research examines the fundamental
neurobiological underpinning of the disruptive
effect of cocaine on maternal behavior and
maternal motivation in the postpartum rat.
15
Gail Pereira Do Carmo, Ph.D CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentor S. Stevens
Negus, Ph.D.
Dr. Pereira Do Carmo is a senior research fellow
at McLean Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Her
research focus includes using animal models to
investigate the psychopharmacology of opioids,
particularly in relation to pain and analgesia.

16
Carmela Reichel, MA CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentor Rick Bevins,
M.D.
Ms. Reichels research examines bupropion
pretreatment during the acquisition of
methamphe-tamine self-administration and lever
pressing for sucrose in rats. Bupropion reduced
methamphetamine infusions and sucrose deliveries
earned. Combined, these results suggest that
bupropion has a general effect within the brains
appetitive / reward system.
17
Daniela Ruedi-Bettschen, Ph.D CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentor Dona M. Platt,
Ph.D.
Dr. Rüdi-Bettschens research concentrates on
drug and alcohol self-administration studies in
primates. One of her main projects investigates
the role of specific serotonergic mechanisms
(5-HT2C) in cocaine reinstatement in squirrel
monkeys.
18
Erin E. Shannon, Ph.D CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentor Kathleen A.
Grant, Ph.D.
Dr. Shannons research interests lie in the
assessment of behaviors underlying drug and
alcohol abuse. In particular, she is interested
in understanding the role impulsivity plays in
the initiation of drug use and how subsequent
drug use influences impulsive behaviors.
19
William Stoops, Ph.D CPDD Early Career
Investigator Travel AwardMentors Craig R. Rush,
Ph.D., Sharon L. Walsh, Ph.D.
Dr. Stoops research examines the behavioral and
pharmacological determinants of the abuse
potential of stimulant and opioid drugs using
drug discrimination and drug self-administration
procedures in humans. He is also interested in
the epidemiology of methamphetamine use in
Kentucky, testing novel pharmacotherapies for
stimulant dependence, and developing and
validating human laboratory models of combined
behavioral and pharmacological treatments for
cocaine dependence.
