Gathering Information In pairs you need to
select one of three marine species that are
farmed in New Zealand mussel, oyster or salmon.
Read the resources provided and use any
additional material to complete a PMI chart.
? One student is to identify the positives and
one student is to identify the negatives. Add
any interesting points as you gather the
information. ? Share the information collected
with your partner so you can both complete the
PMI chart on one species. Each pair should
share their PMI chart with another pair that has
completed a chart for a different species.

  • Task 2
  • New Zealanders need to take care when considering
the impact they have on their countrys marine
biodiversity. This includes the variety of life
in the ocean, sea and coastal environments.
  • Use the following starter questions in
    researching our impact on biodiversity.
  • How could different types of aquaculture change a
coastal community when they physically alter a
    habitat?
  • Does human activity seriously threaten
    biodiversity?
  • How does pollution affect the sea, aquaculture
    and coastal communities?
  • Develop an argument for or against the
    establishment of a
  • new aquaculture farming business.

Applying Aquaculture Product or Marine
Pest? There are people and organizations in New
Zealand that would consider Undaria pinnatifida
(a brown kelp that is not native to NZ) a pest.
Whereas other groups in New Zealand think that
this kelp could be farmed and that it would be
great for the New Zealand economy. At present
this kelp is preserved and imported into New
Zealand from Japan. You will need to consider
both viewpoints before writing a persuasive
letter to the editor of The New Zealand Herald,
North and South Magazine or your local MP stating
clearly your point of view.

Applying Cross-Curricular
