Consumer Federation of America
CFA is a non-profit association of more than 300
consumer groups, with a combined total membership
of more than 50 million people. CFA was founded
in 1968 to advance the consumers interest
through advocacy and education.

What is America Saves Week?
  • An annual opportunity to help individuals to
    assess and improve their savings habits
  • An organizing opportunity to engage more partners
    and spur more financial action
  • By focusing activity within a Week, there is a
    boost in
  • Media exposure
  • Recognition from public officials
  • The number of participating organizations
  • The number of people reached through
  • direct and indirect contact
  • Saver enrollment

  • America Saves Week
  • In 2008, over the course of America Saves Week,
    conducted Feb. 24 March 2, 2008
  • More than 600 hundred organizations, agencies,
    financial institutions, non-profits and companies
    participated by reaching out to employees,
    customers, members or the general public
  • Over 75,000 people attended over 1,800 events
  • Over 25,000 enrolled as Savers through America
    Saves or affiliated local Saves campaigns, or
    took the Military Saves Pledge
  • Over half a million people saw information about
    America Saves Week on the web
  • Millions were reached through press in major
    markets including Washington, DC, New York City,
    Los Angeles, Chicago, Phoenix, Miami, among many
    others
  • A new website, www.AmericaSavesWeek.org, provided
    info and advice to individuals and organizations
    and,
  • Saves Week was recognized with a resolution in
    the U.S. House of Representatives, sponsored by
    Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH).
    Several mayors and elected officials supported
    the Week through proclamations and statements of
    support.

  • Organize Roll Your Change Week
  • What it is One time, Once a year
  • Students roll their change and deposit at a
    financial institution during the Week
  • Students open or add to existing accounts
  • Loose change at home is already money saved but
    not active, Coinstar estimates over 12 billion
    in loose change, approx. 99 per household
  • It needs to be deposited into an account or it
    will be spent or remain inactive
  • Students can enroll as a Youth Saver, on line,
    and commit to themselves to save for a goal and
    save regularly, and receive reinforcement
    benefits
  • Financial institution partners can provide
    incentives to open and add to accounts
  • Entering the 5th year of RYCW in Cleveland, Ohio
    almost 1,000,000 in new deposits

  • Benefits to Students
  • Students save some money and potentially begin
    saving regularly
  • Look forward to next year because it was fun,
    easy, interesting and they see savings grow
  • Begin to develop a positive savings habit
  • If they enroll as a Youth Saver receive monthly
    eCoach emails, quarterly America Saver, special
    features (Auto Saves video) and survey to gauge
    saving regularly

  • Benefits to JumpStart
  • Encourage financial action and lead on behavioral
    change that can be measured
  • New partnerships emerge at local and state level
  • An opportunity to establish the new school
    banking program for this time period
  • Data regarding reach, commitments to saving
    goals, aggregate dollars, financial institutions,
    and location ( City/State) that helps to promote
    the work of JumpStart
  • Use existing resources and materials that
    co-brand
  • Create new competition/event
  • An event that can be institutionalized and
    annualized

  • How to Organize RYCW
  • At a school, a teacher and /or student leaders
  • Recruit a bank and/or credit union partner ask
    them to provide an incentive for opening and
    adding to accounts during the Week ask them to
    provide change sleeves
  • Choose a date for the Week (ideally with America
    Saves Week, February 22-March 1, 2009)
  • Adapt the flyer/poster for local use or create
    own flyer and marketing materials (prize
    opportunity)
  • Promote the Week, include letter home to parents
    notifying them of opportunity
  • Organize field trip to the bank to make deposits
    or have bank come and pick up, or students go on
    their own/with parents
  • Can organize contests, events, competitions with
    other schools
  • Create a Youth Saves Day as part of the Week with
    motivational speakers on why save and enrollment
    using school computers
  • School and FI Partner can release a joint press
    release, ex As a JumpStart Initiative we are
    participating in America Saves Week by organizing
    a Roll Your Change Week .
  • School and FI Partner can issue a joint press
    release one month later indicating results

  • How state coalitions can cooperate with existing
    campaigns to participate in America Saves Week
  • Organize Roll Your Change events statewide
  • Encourage its members to participate in other
    local events, for instance by serving judges for
    local Piggy Bank Pageants or organizing and
    participating in other contests or give-aways
  • Encourage members to serve on local planning
    committees
  • Volunteer to teach savings lessons in local
    classrooms with an America Saves partner
  • Notify your network of teachers on how they and
    their students can take advantage of America
