Graduate Education and the Role of the
Graduate College at ASU
  • Dr. Maria T. Allison
  • University Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate
    Studies
  • January 2008

2
Graduate College Mission
  • The mission of the Graduate College is to promote
    and
  • support the integrity, quality, and vitality of
    ASU graduate
  • programs including all master's degrees,
    professional
  • degrees and doctoral degrees.
  • Our goal is to insure university-wide standards
    of quality,
  • access, and equity in graduate programs and
    promote the
  • interests of ASU's graduate students and graduate
  • education within the state, national, and
    international
  • arenas.

3
Selected Goals and Objectives
  • To facilitate the recruitment and degree
    completion of a highly
  • diverse and high quality graduate student
population representing the state, nation, and
    global communities.
  • To facilitate the building of university-wide
    interdisciplinary
  • and transdisciplinary graduate degree
    programs that foster
  • interdisciplinary synergy among graduate
    students and their
  • faculty.
  • To expand and shape graduate financial support
    programs,
  • including fellowships programs, that
    support the recruitment
  • and completion of a highly diverse and high
    quality graduate
  • student population.

4
4) To facilitate the graduate growth by 2020 on
all campuses with major growth at Polytechnic,
West, and Downtown Phoenix campuses. 5) To
encourage and promote the development of creative
degree delivery platforms (e.g., one-year
accelerated masters, bachelors/masters,
on-line degree programs) that facilitate growth
and opportunities in niche markets.
5
  • To encourage development of innovative graduate
programs that are responsive to educational needs
    of Arizonas diverse populations (e.g.,
    professional masters programs and clinical
    partnerships with embedded curriculum benefiting
    the community, and region).
  • 7) To expand ASUs graduate professional
    development programs (e.g., seminars, workshops),
    including the nationally acclaimed Preparing
Future Faculty program, to support the on-going
    education of graduate students.

The Graduate Faculty Model InitiativeImplemented
Fall 2007
20
Principles of the Graduate Faculty Initiative
  • To position graduate education, particularly PhD
education, within the vision of One University in
    Many Places.
  • 2. To develop a graduate education structure that
builds on ASUs expansive intellectual capital by
enhancing the capacity of faculty expertise from
across the university to participate in our PhD
    programs.
  • 3. To foster interdisciplinary and
    multidisciplinary perspectives, and facilitate
high quality research among our doctoral students
    and faculty.

21
Building a Graduate Faculty Model
  • PhD graduate education is now organized around a
    Graduate Faculty model.
  • With appropriate credentials, individual faculty
will become members of the university graduate
faculty and will organize themselves around PhD
    program areas
  • Graduate Faculty in Psychology
  • Graduate Faculty in Sustainability
  • Graduate Faculty in.
  • These graduate faculty groups will be more
    expansive than departmental/school units.
  • An individual may be a member of multiple
    graduate faculties simultaneously.

Quality Considerations with Increased Growth
  • Manage enrollment
  • Continue to develop resources to support graduate
    financial support
  • Continue to assess and improve graduate student
    quality (e.g., selectivity and yield)
  • Continue to diversify our graduate student
    population
  • Continue to work with academic units to
    streamline their curricula

32
Summary
  • Build structures within graduate education that
    facilitate institutional integration of President
    Crows design imperatives
  • Facilitate development of interdisciplinary
    initiatives new doctoral program structures,
    certificates, concentrations
  • Focus heavily on learning outcomes in curricular
    program design
