Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
  • Our Strategic plan calls for initiatives that
will advance the success of women in commercial
real estate, with the goal of achieving parity in
opportunity, influence and power in the industry.
  • We needed a consistent, relevant source of data
for benchmarking womens progress toward these
    goals.
  • We needed information to guide us in developing
and tailoring programs to help women achieve
    success in the industry.
  • As the only association dedicated to women in the
industry, CREW Network is uniquely positioned to
address these issues and measure the achievements
of women in commercial real estate.

Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
Methodology Gathering Data
  • Online survey link sent by partner associations
yielded 1,834 respondents more than enough for
    statistically valid analysis.
  • Telephone follow up interviews with 250 of the
    respondents to gather qualitative data.
  • 64 of respondents were women, 36 were men and
all major disciplines of the commercial real
    estate industry were represented.

16
Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
Survey Highlights
  • Parity does not exist in compensation
  • While 58 of men reported incomes over 150,000
in 2004, only 24 of women reported that salary
level in the same time period.
  • Perception vs. Reality
  • When, asked, the majority of participants did
not perceive there to be a gender gap, but the
    statistics show otherwise.

18
Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
Survey Highlights
  • Parity does not exist in level achieved
  • Comparing men and women with more than 20 years
of experience in the industry, 44 of men held
the title of president, chief executive officer
or chief financial officer, while only 23 of
    women held those titles.

Even though more men tend to be in these
roles, men need to have confidence in women,
knowing they can do the job as well as men.
  • Male, Brokerage/Sales/Leasing, 22 years experience

19
Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005

    take to reach these positions
  • Female, Asset/Property/Facilities Management, 18
    years experience
  • Its the Good Old Boys network, men want to
hire other men to take care of these top level
positions, that is just how it is.
  • Male, Development/Development Services, 14 years
    experience

21
Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
Survey Highlights
  • Work/Life Balance
  • Women who were very satisfied with their
    work/life balance reported that their
satisfaction levels increased as their experience
levels increased. This was not true for men.
  • Commercial real estate professionals tend to be
less satisfied with their work/life balance than
with their level of success achieved. This is
true for both men and women.

22
Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
Survey Highlights
  • Success Career Satisfaction
  • A majority of both men and women in commercial
real estate feel they have achieved high levels
    of success in their careers.

Women gain satisfaction in other levels of
life, and salary is just a piece of job
satisfaction.
  • Female, Brokerage/Sales/Leasing, 16 years
    experience

23
Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
Survey Highlights
  • Among those reporting high levels of success
  • Women considered it more important than men to
    work in a team-oriented environment.
  • It was significantly more important to women to
earn the respect of their co-workers.
  • Significantly more men than women reported higher
levels of satisfaction levels reported from being
    decision makers in their organizations.

24
Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
What Does it All Mean?
  • Weve identified the areas of the industry where
    women are advancing more quickly
  • Financial/Professional Services both in numbers
    and compensation
  • Weve identified areas where we have our work cut
out for us to ensure that women have an equal
    opportunity to achieve success.
  • Brokerage Development where women are not
    gaining ground.
  • We have established benchmarks from which we can
    measure our future success.

25
Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
What Does it All Mean?
  • We have more questions to address with future
    research
  • How are women responding to the glass ceiling in
our industry do they leave or start their own
    firm?
  • How can companies encourage women to seek/become
    comfortable with commission-based compensation?

26
Women in Commercial Real Estate Survey 2005
What Do We Do Next?
  • Share the results through a media campaign and
educate the industry to motivate us all to action.
  • Develop new initiatives and tailor existing
programs to help advance women in the industry.
  • Become a resource to companies proactively
seeking to advance women in the industry.
  • Build on the knowledge gained and regularly
    measure our progress.
