LeadershipPresentation Outline
  • Setting the Context
  • Leadership Philosophy
  • UWO Governing Ideas
  • Enabling Student Leadership
  • Educating the Chancellor
  • Continuing My Education as a Chancellor

3
Setting the Context Leadership Philosophy
  • Leadership should be viewed as much more of a
group than individual phenomenon. Therefore, an
    effective leader encourages and supports
leadership attitudes and behaviors among as many
    group members as possible.

4
Setting the ContextLeadership Philosophy
  • In an academic community, an effective leader
must understand and be committed to a shared
governance structure that joins the core internal
and external stakeholder groups. This type of
shared governance is the heart and soul of a
    collegial organization.

5
Setting the ContextLeadership Philosophy
  • Successful leaders must first help ensure that
the input and advice obtained from stakeholders
    is of the highest quality
  • and they must then use as much of the advice as
    possible.

6
Setting the ContextLeadership Philosophy
  • Effective leaders must realize that they will
never have all the input and information they
would ideally like to have before making a
decision. Therefore, they must do their best to
make the decision in a timely fashion.

7
Setting the ContextLeadership Philosophy
  • Respected leaders challenge themselves and their
colleagues to never underestimate what members of
an academic community are capable of
    accomplishing. Consequently, they encourage,
support, and engage in calculated risk-taking
    behavior.

8
Setting the ContextLeadership Philosophy
  • Effective leaders prioritize their work to ensure
that the many everyday decisions are made in a
routine, timely fashion so that major decisions
are given the necessary amount of time, input,
and thought. The proper prioritization of time
and the ability to quickly obtain extensive
advice leads to informed decisions and,
    therefore, a decisive leader.

9
Setting the ContextLeadership Philosophy
  • Effective leaders understand the crucial
    importance of developing always-stronger
relationships between themselves and leaders of
the core stakeholder groups. Given that effective
leaders must sometime strain these relationships,
they must then have the ability to "repair"
    strained relationships.
