    regularly-scheduled, face-to-face classes
  • Class offerings that would not be possible due to
    space/capital scarcity
  • Flexibility
  • Earn and Learn is supported
  • Learn/Review anytime, anywhere (learners online

eLearning Instruction Effectiveness
  • Effectiveness of eLearning

    study)Sloan Consortium Study
  • The Value of Online Learning Perspectives from
    the University of Illinois
  • Ten Ways Online Education Matches, or Surpasses,
    Face-to-Face Learning by Mark Kassop
  • Univ of Alberta eLearning From Grass-Roots to

Online/eLearning what do we mean?
  • Distance Learning
  • student(s) and instructor(s) are not in the same
    place
  • distance learning may employ correspondence
study, and/or audio, video, computer and
    communication technologies
  • may be synchronous or asynchronous

10
Online/eLearning what do we mean?
  • Distance Learning
  • Computer-Based Learning
  • Course content and instructional processes are
    based/presented on computer (often utilizing
    media and CD/DVD technology)
  • May NOT require internet connection (could be
delivered on stand-alone stations, independent of
    a network)
  • Instructor and student(s) may or may not be
    geographically separated

11
Online/eLearning what do we mean?
  • Distance Learning
  • Computer-Based Learning
  • Online/eLearning
  • Internet, web-based learning (intranet/internetLA
    N/WAN)
  • Virtual classrooms and digital collaboration
  • The use of network technologies to create,
foster, deliver, and facilitate learning, anytime
    and anywhere.
  • Although eLearning could be defined more broadly
    (electronic learningcomputer-based) its usage is
much more in line with eCommerce, eBay using
the internet as the interaction medium

12
Online/eLearning a Perspective
  • I used to livein a Global Village
  • Until they pulled it downto build
    theInformation Superhighway,

No point trying to get started on a whole course
curriculum if we are just getting our feet wet in
the realm of eLearning. Start with a small task
take a small step.
18
Where Do I Start with online/eLearning?
Online/eLearning
19
Why Use eLearning with my Classes?
Online/eLearning
  • Enhance Learning
  • To illustrate or reviewa difficult or complex
    concept
  • Learners can access anytime, anywhere
  • Increase Quality and Productivity of Instruction
  • Create once use many times over
  • Reusability encourages employing high quality
    production resources (graphics, video clips,
    simulations)
  • Examplesgtgt What is an OS and what does it do?
gtgt How does magnetic storage work?

20
How can I get started with eLearning?
Online/eLearning
  • Pick a concept that can be explained on a page
  • A single concept that needs clarification,
    review, illustration
  • A concept that has great reusability
  • Create a layout/storyboard to develop the single
    concept lesson
  • State the Learning Objective (expected outcome)
    clearly
  • Sketch out the lesson development
  • Identify illustrations needed (photos, diagrams,
    clipart, media, etc.)

21
How can I get started with eLearning?
Online/eLearning
  • Learn a webpage creation tool
  • Take a step to get comfortable with a webpage
    creation tool
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver or other
  • Use the webpage creation tool to build a lesson
    webpage
  • Follow your lesson development plan
  • Preview the webpage in an internet browser

22
How to host an eLearning webpage?
Online/eLearning
  • Discuss hosting arrangements with the
    institutions webmaster
  • Outline the extent to which you may go in
creating lesson pages or a whole learning site
  • Institutional websites typically link
    instructional resource pages/sites from
    departmental sites
  • Single concept illustration pages and/or whole
sites are commonly linked from faculty members
    pages
  • Example WWBs Computer Studies Site
    VCC Humanities linkage to Economics
    WWB Economics Site
