FORMAT OF TOP-UP
  • Exam
  • 2 hours as much and more than most people will
    want or need
  • Case study prepared beforehand
  • Short answer / multiple choice questions

WHERE AND WHEN
  • Exams to be held in all the current training
    centres
  • Possibility of other centres for the
    geographically isolated but need groups
  • Register for an exam through AMTRA
  • Top Up training courses will be available if
    wanted
  • Exams will be held from Easter this year
  • Cannot all be left until 2008

  • CASE STUDY
  • 2 given at time of exam registration
  • 1 of these will appear in the exam
  • Time to think and prepare an answer before
    attending exam

  • Dairy Farmer with 200 milking cattle rears own
    replacements, calving at 2 years. Bull calves
    sold at ten days.
  • Land sandy and dry. No natural water. New leys
    established every 4 years as part of arable
    rotation except 10 hectares parkland permanent
    grazing- unsuitable for conservation and used for
    grazing yearlings
  • History of lungworm in cows four years ago

  • Design a suitable endoparasite control policy for
    this farm with suggested products and an
    approximate timetable. Briefly discuss the
    advantages and disadvantages of different types
    of product that could be used.
  • Discuss the information you must get from and
    give to the farmer.
  • How must the farmer store, record and dispose of
    any surplus products you sell him. Give any
    safety precautions he should be aware of.

  • Mr Jones has a flock of 300 breeding halfbred
    mules. He buys in 80 replacement gimmers from
    autumn sales around the country. His lambing
    percentage is 170 and lambs in March
  • He farms in an upland area on permanent grazing
    adjacent to hill ground. There are no hedges or
    streams.
  • His lambs go to market from July and he keeps
    around 100 as stores for the January market

  • Miss White is the owner of a livery yard.
  • There are stables for 30 horses and her yard is
    always at 80 plus capacity.
  • There is a turnaround of around 50 of the
    horses throughout the year.
  • Horses are stabled from November to March but
    most are turned out in the day time through the
    rest of the year in 4 paddocks mares in two,
    geldings in the big paddock and difficult horses
    in the little paddock. She has a total of 3
    hectares.
  • Miss White would like to minimise any chance f
    horses in her yard having a worm problem and so
    has required all owners to follow a set worming
    policy.

  • Have you obtained and recorded the right
    information? Can you legally sell these products
    to these people?
  • Have you considered withholding periods?
  • Have you considered the individual circumstances
    of that farm?
  • Have you checked on their competence to apply the
    products?
  • Do you know what they must do once they have the
    product to stay within the law?
