Title: eBug

1
e-Bug
  • Using web based games to educate about
    appropriate antibiotic usage

2
Project Background
  • e-Bug is a European wide, DG SANCO funded,
antibiotic and hygiene teaching resource for
    junior and senior school children.
  • There are 17 countries involved in e-Bug covering
    62 of the European population.
  • .

3
Project Aims
  • To compliment national antibiotic and hygiene
    educational campaigns
  • Develop an antibiotic and hygiene teaching pack
website with online games for both junior and
    senior schools
  • Translate and implement the pack across
associated countries in close collaboration with
local Ministries of Health and Education
  • Evaluation of use and impact of pack and website.
  • Disseminate and market the e-Bug resource to
    collaborating partner countries

4
Project Outputs
  • Earlier research found the optimal age targets
for e-Bug to be 9-12 year olds and 13-15 year
    olds.
  • e-Bug will produce two packs, targeting each age
group with an appropriate level of detail.
  • Similarly, there will be two online, web based
games that will appeal to each audience and cover
the same learning outcomes as the physical packs.

5
Research to Date
  • Existing curricula across Europe was examined
with help from teacher focus groups to identify
the level of detail and difficultly appropriate
    for each age group.
  • Project partners and medical experts worked to
identify the key messages and learning outcomes
    that e-Bug will deliver.
  • Pack and game ideas were suggested and work
shopped with teachers, project partners and
    pupils.
  • The pack content has been fully evaluated and the
    final pack is being prepared.

6
e-Bug Games
  • There will be two, age appropriate games
    developed.
  • We conducted focus groups and desk research to
identify the types of play experience enjoyed by
    each group.
  • This resulted in us designing two very different
games that cover the same core content, in
    different ways.

7
e-Bug Junior Game
  • We found that younger pupils enjoyed games that
are aggregated on gaming portals like Kongregate.
  • One popular style of gameplay was the Platform
Game a gaming style shown by games such as the
    Super Mario Brothers.
  • Pupils also expressed an interest in TV Game
Shows such as Who Wants to be a Millionaire and
    their online game equivalents.

8
Game Style
  • Game style encompasses two genres of game
  • Platform game
  • fast action
  • very interactive
  • can experiment and see results
  • popular amongst age group
  • Quiz game
  • highlights purpose and key elements of levels
  • reinforces learning
  • assesses learning

9
Game Process
  • Cover each of the LO's in one "round" of
    gameplay.
  • A round consists of a pre and post question and
answer session followed by a platform game
    elelement
  • One 'round' features a different style of game
    because platform game wasn't suitable

10
Game Process
11
Introduction to Microbes
  • Player photographs bugs one type at a time

12
Introduction to Microbes
  • Bugs are different sizes
  •

13
Introduction to Microbes
  • Bugs are shown in different locations

Inside the body
On the skins surface
In the kitchen
14
Mechanics
  • Good and Bad Microbes
  • Good microbes can keep us healthy
  • Bacteria can be put to good use
  • Sometimes microbes make us ill

15
Good and Bad Microbes
  • Good bugs hurt bad bugs and stop them entering
    body
  •

16
Good and Bad Microbes
  • Player transports lactobacillus to make yogurt

17
Mechanics
  • Hand, Respiratory and Food Hygiene
  • Infection can be spread through unclean hands
  • Hand washing can prevent the spread of infection
  • Infection can be spread through sneezing and
    coughing
  • Sneezing or coughing in your hand can still
    spread infection
  • Microbes can be found on our food and can
    transfer to humans
  • Cooking food properly can kill harmful microbes

18
Hygiene
  • The food sorting game is used to show hand,
    respiratory and respiratory hygiene.

19
Antibiotics and Vaccine Use
  • Antibiotics and Vaccine Use
  • Most common infections get better on their own
through time, rest, liquid intake and healthy
    living
  • If antibiotics are taken, it is important to
    finish the course
  • Vaccines prevent a range of infections
  • There are not vaccines for all infections

20
Antibiotics and Vaccine Use
  • Player throws white blood cells
  • Player delivers full course of antibiotics to
    infection

Evaluation Plans
  • We will be evaluating the game experience between
    now and January.
  • Changes will be made in January and February 09
  • Formal evaluation of the effectiveness will begin
    in March 09
  • Focus groups will be used
  • We will use the game show elements of the game to
capture player performance data to see if
questions are answered differently after playing
    a level.

24
Senior Game
  • The process for designing the senior game is
similar to that of the junior game.
  • The game design is similar to that of Phoenix
Wright, a popular detective game available on the
    Nintendo DS
  • In the game, the player explores a crime scene
    narrative, interviewing characters and finding
evidence that illuminates their understanding of
    microbes, hygiene and antibiotics.
