Objective for the training was
  • To train ELL teachers to instruct others in the
    SIOP Model
  • or in other words to
  • TRAIN THE TRAINERS

4
SIOP Model
  • The SIOP Model presents an empirically validated
model of sheltered instruction. which provides
teachers with an instrument for observing and
    quantifying the implementation of sheltered
    instruction.

5
SIOP MODEL
  • Involves the addition of
  • language objectives
  • in regular education lesson plans.
  • The use of strategies within the
  • regular ed classroom that facilitate the
learning of English as well as the content.

6
Basis of the SIOP MODEL
Chapter 2, p. 20
7
SIOP MODEL
  • Emphasizes the difference between casual English
and academic English as it relates to all of
    our students
  • Language objectives address this need and
therefore allow students to master the content
  • The use of language objectives are in fact useful
    for all the students

Meaningful activities Is it meaningful????
  • Native English students are learning the
scientific names and habitats of butterflies
  • ELL students are coloring and cutting out
pictures of butterflies to make a mobile

No, ELL students should be engaging in meaningful
activities that allow them to learn reasonably
the same content.
12
SIOP MODEL
  • Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the
classroom teacher to modify the lesson to meet
the needs of the students in the class.
  • More specific modifications are then left for the
ELL teachers as they work with the students that
    have the most need.

In conclusion
  • The SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Operation
Protocol) Model is useful in reaching all
students but particularly ELL students because it
allows for the addition of language objectives
that open their understanding of the content.
