Title: GIS in SupplyChain Management

1
GIS in Supply-Chain Management
  • Henry C. Co
  • Technology and Operations Management,
  • California Polytechnic and State University

2
To introduce GIS in two courses
  • EBZ 304 Supply-Chain Management (for e-Business
    majors)
  • TOM 420 Operation Technologies and Strategies
  • (for Technology Operations Management majors)

3
What will the students learn?
  • An overview of GIS, GIS software and its
    functionality
  • How GIS data are retrieved, analyzed displayed
    (sections from the green book)
  • Where to go for more information
  • Two supply-chain management applications
  • Facility Location and Planning (based on the
elementary-school location problem we did in
    class)
  • Transportation and Distribution (using Arc
    Logistics)

4
Online Video Clips from ESRI
  • What is GIS?
  • ArcLogistics Route 3 - Fleet Monitoring with AVL
    Systems
  • GIS and Agriculture

5
Teaching Methods
  • 1st 2-hour class
  • Theory lecture with PowerPoint slides and
    flashmedia
  • Quick software demo (ArcCatalog and ArcMap)
  • A group assignment on facility planning (similar
to the elementary-school location problem we did
    in class) will be assigned.
  • 2nd 2-hour class
  • Discussion of project
  • Demonstrate the use of ArcMap in solving the
facility planning problem (PowerPoint slides with
screens shots will be made available to the
    students).

6
Teaching Methods
  • 3rd 2-hour class
  • Theory lecture with PowerPoint slides
  • Quick software demo (Arc Logistics)
  • Demonstration of a vehicle-routing problem solved
on Arc Logistics (PowerPoint slides with screens
shots will be made available to the students)
  • 4th 2-hour class (Lab session either in 5-215 or
    smart classrooms)
  • Instructions for lab sessions
  • Students will use ArcMap to analyze the facility
planning problem ArcLogistics for the vehicle
    routing problem
  • In the vehicle routing problem, students will
create their own trucks, drivers, and routes
given the addresses of the locations and a
    delivery time using software.

7
What will be covered in the lectures?
  • What is GIS?
  • Three Views of a GIS
  • Types of Data Models
  • ArcGIS Software Overview
  • Geographic Data Concepts, File Formats, Topology
  • Anatomy of Spatial File Formats
  • shapefile, geodatabase, coverage
  • Coordinate Systems and Projections

8
What will be covered in the software demo?
  • ArcCatalog (based on Chapter 4 of the green book)
  • ArcMap (based on Chapters 3 and 8 of the green
book) ArcLogistics (based on the tutorials in
    ArcLogistics Route)

9
Assessment
  • 20 of the final examination for the course will
assess the students understanding of theoretical
    concepts and acquired software skills.
  • Projects 10 of grade
  • The questions asked will basically comprise of
multiple choices or fill in the blanks type
    questions.

10
Sample Exam Questions
  • What are the two types of GIS queries?
  • Attribute and location
  • Table and attribute
  • Location and map
  • Containment and intersection
  • What is a raster?
  • An image that is referenced to a real-world
    location
  • An array of square cells
  • A dataset whose values represent classes of
    geographic features
  • An array of triangular cells
  • In vector data model, all geographic objects can
    be represented as
  • points, lines, and polygons
  • points lines and polygons and surfaces
  • points, lines, polygons, surfaces and Pixels
  • Cal Poly, Pomona is located in UTM zone
    ____________.
  • The most efficient path between two locations is
    called a ____________.

The quizzes will be close book type.
11
Resources Needed
  • ArcCatalog, ArcMap, and ArcLogistics available in
    our smart classrooms.
  • Non-print resources, catalogues and databases
  • Selected materials from ESRI virtual campus.
  • Digital books, Census 2001 database, selected
State GIS Data from SA government.
