REFINEMENT OF TECHNIQUE
  • TECHNIQUE
  • technique amounts to the sequence of actions
necessary to perform a physical skill accurately
    and efficiently
  • will depend on
  • the physique and strength of the performer
  • the requirements of the sport or skill
  • the mechanics of the desired movement
  • refinement of technique involves
  • knowledge of the perfect technical model by a
    coach
  • knowledge of the mechanics of a skill
  • being aware of methods by which technique
    can be changed
  • the first step is to observe the performance
    by video analysis

REFINEMENT OF TECHNIQUE
  • PROZONE
  • this is video analysis software used by
    premiership soccer and international teams
  • provides information on the movement and
    positional play of players

DARTFISH

FORCE PLATES
  • FORCE PLATES
  • are inserted into the ground at the take off area
for a long jump or high jump
  • or in the space in a track immediately after a
    sprint start
  • so that the patterns of force made by a foot
striking the plate can be determined
  • this information (combined with video of the same
footfall) can tell a coach the precise way in
which the foot is active during its strike with
    the ground
  • and enable him / her to assess whether changes in
    foot posture are required

PEDOMETRY
  • PEDOMETER
  • this is a wrist worn device used to detect
    footfall
  • what it actually detects is the impact between
    foot and the ground
  • which causes the whole body to decelerate and
    accelerate
  • therefore it is a inertial device detecting
    change in position
  • its purpose is to count the number of footfalls
during a race, training session or activity
  • a coach will use this information to assess
stride length or total energy output

8
HEART RATE MONITORING
  • HR MONITOR
  • fairly old technology
  • can be strapped to the torso or worn as a
    watch-like device on the wrist
  • so that heart rate can be observed by the
    performer
  • during training or competition
  • to ensure that HR operates within a predetermined
    training zone
  • this technology works by detecting the electrical
signal produced by the heart during its beat
  • similar to ECG technology

9
USE OF GPS TECHNOLOGY
  • THE BASICS
  • GPSports have developed a system which includes
  • storage and interpretation of positional data of
    sports players
  • at 5 Hz, which means 5 data points per second
  • heart rate determination
  • unobtrusive equipment able to be worn by
    participants during competitive situations
  • simple data download within 10 minutes of the end
    of playing
  • equipment module is inserted in a computer linked
    docking module
  • dataset conversion into customised report format
is then automatic and available to a coach within
    30 minutes

USE OF GPS TECHNOLOGY
  • THE BASICS
  • the following slide shows a dataplot overlaid on
    a google earth image
  • of a single player and his activity during a
    soccer training match

USE OF GPS TECHNOLOGY
  • THE BASICS

    playing area

12
USE OF GPS TECHNOLOGY
  • NUMERICAL DATA
  • this display shows distance travelled
  • and maximum / minimum / average
  • heart rate
  • speed
  • this is the minimum data of use to a coach
  • future developments include incorporation of
    gyroscope and magnetometer
  • which would enable production of 3 dimensional
data (up and down, side to side, and forward and
    backwards)
  • and orientation of the participant - which
direction is he / she facing?
