FAU High SchoolA Dual Enrollment Prototype
  • October 2007

3
Background
  • Continued Expansion of an Innovative High School
on the existing Florida Atlantic University (FAU)
    Dual Enrollment Program
  • Approved by the FAU Board of Trustees in May 2004
  • Initiated in the 2004-05 school year with an
enrollment of high performing students in grades
    9, 10, 11 and 12 (only 31 students admitted)

4
Why FAU High School?
  • Academic challenge unlike any other
  • Transition into the college experience in a very
    supportive, positive way
  • Complete up to 75 of college bachelor's degree
course work by graduation from high school (75-90
    of 120 credit hours)
  • Save money (tuition, fees and book costs total
about 20,000 for 80 semester hours of
    undergraduate tuition books 700/semester)

5
Why FAU High School (cont.)?
  • Explore possible majors/interests early
  • Enjoy many university student benefits
  • Enhance scholarship options with Bright Futures
Scholarship and other financial aid from FAU and
    others
  • Retain transfer options with other Florida
universities and other public and private
    institutions nationwide
  • Improve competitive admissions opportunities

6
Why FAU High School? (cont.)
  • Save time If you start college as a regular
freshman at 18, you would finish traditional
four-year programs at age 22. The same student
as an FAU High graduate could complete the 4-year
program at 19, or a five-year engineering program
at 20 or an eight year traditional medical
    program at 23.

7
Question
  • Why did you choose FAU High School?
  • What are the benefits?
  • What are the drawbacks?

8
Dual Enrollment - Defined
  • State Statute (s. 1007.271 FS)
  • Grants high school and college credit for
equivalent high school and university courses
  • No cost to parents, including fees and textbooks
  • Dual enrollment available at all Florida public
    universities and colleges
  • School district policies for dual enrollment
    intensity and process vary

9
Comparison of Traditional Dual Enrollment and FAU
High
  • Criteria Students have minimum of 3.0 unweighted
GPA and pass the College Placement Test or
    equivalent
  • Enrollment Process Students enroll at both FAU
High School and Florida Atlantic University
  • Registration Process High School Counselor
    advises, constructs students schedules, and
collaborates with FAU Student Services to
    complete scheduling
  • Parental Communication University procedures and
policies define course curricula and guidelines
  • (Parental communication is with FAU High School
    only)

10
FAU High Intensive Dual Enrollment
  • Rigorous admissions and course selection process
    for highly-talented high school students
  • Ninth grade classes provided at FAU High School
    on ADHUS campus
  • Tenth, eleventh and twelfth graders dual enrolled
on FAU campus for most coursework (up to 17
    credit hours/semester)
  • Organized into Learning Communities/Study Groups
  • Professor, Adjunct and graduate assistant provide
    course and laboratory support
  • Class, tutorial and counseling support at FAU
    High School and FAU

11
Hypothesis
  • Can talented high school-aged students in grades
10-12 be successful with more than 3 college
    courses (9 hours) per semester?
  • Requirement A pool of academically-talented and
    demographically representative applicants, two
levels of collaborating and concerned faculty, an
open and systematic approach, and meaningful
    extracurricular activities

    9th grade
