2FAU High SchoolA Dual Enrollment Prototype
3 Background
- Continued Expansion of an Innovative High School
on the existing Florida Atlantic University (FAU)
Dual Enrollment Program - Approved by the FAU Board of Trustees in May 2004
- Initiated in the 2004-05 school year with an
enrollment of high performing students in grades
9, 10, 11 and 12 (only 31 students admitted)
4Why FAU High School?
- Academic challenge unlike any other
- Transition into the college experience in a very
supportive, positive way - Complete up to 75 of college bachelor's degree
course work by graduation from high school (75-90
of 120 credit hours) - Save money (tuition, fees and book costs total
about 20,000 for 80 semester hours of
undergraduate tuition books 700/semester)
5Why FAU High School (cont.)?
- Explore possible majors/interests early
- Enjoy many university student benefits
- Enhance scholarship options with Bright Futures
Scholarship and other financial aid from FAU and
others - Retain transfer options with other Florida
universities and other public and private
institutions nationwide - Improve competitive admissions opportunities
6Why FAU High School? (cont.)
- Save time If you start college as a regular
freshman at 18, you would finish traditional
four-year programs at age 22. The same student
as an FAU High graduate could complete the 4-year
program at 19, or a five-year engineering program
at 20 or an eight year traditional medical
program at 23.
7Question
- Why did you choose FAU High School?
- What are the benefits?
- What are the drawbacks?

- Some questions are
- Dress code
- Extra-Curricular Activities

33Some things (cont.)
- Not a traditional high school experience
- Is not appropriate for all academically talented
students (consider IB, AP, etc.) - Accelerates college completion - good and bad
possibilities - Conserves limited family funds for future degrees
or other children - Importance of last degree - not first
34Some things(cont.)
- Consider limited electives, particularly in the
9th grade - There is no separate high school facility,
although there is some high school space - FAU High/ADHUS is fully accredited (SACS) and all
courses are identified by the states high school
course numbers for description and transfer
purposes - 100 of Graduates received Bright Futures

35Some things(cont.)
- The school has strict rules for grades K-9 and
enforces them the rules for grades 10-12 are
different, but enforced by the university
school - 9th grade may feel like middle school, because
the facilities, faculty and some classes are
shared - Some 9th graders participate in the middle school
or high school activities, while others take
leadership roles with teams or activities
