Root words, Prefixes and Suffixes

• The root is the part of the word that contains
  the basic meaning of the word.

The prefix goes before the root word and changes
the meaning
The suffix goes after the root word

If take is the root word

• mistake - mis is the prefix. It has changed the
  meaning of the root word

mistaken en is the suffix. It has changed the
word mistake (a noun) into mistaken (a verb)

• Compound words are words that are made from two
  words and gives a new meaning
