Title: PREACHING Sound Baptist Bible College April-June Instructor: Pastor Marvin McKenzie, Th.D.

1
PREACHINGSound Baptist Bible CollegeApril-JuneI
nstructor Pastor Marvin McKenzie, Th.D.
  • Lecture Five
  • Types of Sermons

2
Expository
  • Most popular today
  • Style most often employed by men such as Sam
    Davison and Paul Chappell
  • Often those who employ this style express almost
a disdain for any other style (although most use
other styles from time to time.)

3
Expository
  • Strengths
  • Avoids the danger of preaching things that are
    not really biblical
  • Forces the preacher to study the Word of God
  • Covers the whole counsel of God
  • Protects the preacher from reactionary preaching
    against problems and etc.
  • Is the most accepted style of preaching today

4
Expository
  • Weaknesses
  • Often is merely teaching to the intellect not
    preaching to the heart
  • Often done in a lazy and boring way
  • Requires tremendous creativity and skill to
    translate into straightforward preaching
  • Avoids the preachers responsibility to cry
aloud messages directed to his congregation
  • Is not found in the Bible

5
Textual
  • Exposits a smaller portion of Scripture
  • Strengths
  • Closely and carefully deals with the whole
passage instead of skims through portions of a
    larger text
  •

6
Textual
  •
  • Weakness
  • None that I know of
  • A person could take the text out of context
  • This is the type of message most often employed
by men like Paul Schwanke, Tom Malone, Jack
    Hyles, and others

7
Topical
  • Deals with a Biblical truth and weaves all
    related Scripture together
  • Strengths
  • Is the most like the preachers of the Bible
  • Is most likely to accomplish what preaching is
    supposed to accomplish
  • Translates the pastor from an explainer of the
Bible (teacher) to a proclaimer of the Bible
    (preacher)
  • Most likely to cause the preacher to become
    passionate about his message
  • Weaknesses
  • Can become hobby horse preaching.
  • Can cause the preacher to avoid the whole counsel
    of God
  • Can become mean spirited

8
Character Study
  • A topical message centered around a person or
    persons in the Bible
  • Valuable lessons learned from the various persons
    of Scripture
  • Many of the sermons in Acts are character studies
    in nature
  • Teach both positive and negative aspects of human
    nature without becoming too personal

9
Word Study
  • A topical message centered around a particular
    Bible word
  • Requires good study
  • Can be fascinating to a large number of people in
    the church
  • Many times can confront issues without it
appearing you are directing the message to any
    particular person
  • Be careful not to correct the KJV with your
    studies.

10
Evangelistic
  • A topical message geared to urge people to Trust
    Christ as Saviour
  • Our day needs preachers who are gifted in this
  • Every message should be evangelistic in some
portion some messages should be all
    evangelistic
  • Sunday mornings should perhaps be more
    evangelistic than anything else
