Definitions
  • Improper Fractions is a fraction that has a
    numerator greater than the denominator. Write 5
    examples.
  • Mixed Numbers A number that combines whole
    numbers and fractions.

When do we use them?
  • When we are trying to talk about a quantity that
    includes more than a whole and a fraction.
  • We can find an equivalent improper fraction or
  • A number that is greater than 1.0 and has decimals

How to convert Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions
  1. Multiply the number that represents the whole by
    the denominator of the fraction part
  2. Add this product to the numerator of the fraction
    part
  3. Leave the denominator as is and voila we are
    done!

How to convert Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers
  1. Divide the numerator by the denominator and leave
    the remainder in (No decimals)
  2. The Quotient would be the whole part.
  3. The remainder would be the numerator of the
    fraction part and the denominator will remain the
    denominator of it.
  4. Simplify if you can.
