3What is RDA?
- RDA Resource Description and Access
- RDA is a new cataloging code that will replace
AACR2 - New cataloging standard for creating
bibliographic and authority records
4Why replace AACR?
- AACR2 (1978) is showing its age
- The world has changed since 1978
- The Internet happened!
- The place of the catalog in our information
retrieval strategies has changed - Other descriptive metadata standards are now
widely used in libraries - A change was needed to bring cataloging into this
new world
5Why replace AACR?
- RDA is based on internationally established
principles and models - Statement of International Cataloguing Principles
- Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records
6Why replace AACR?
- FRBR User Tasks
- FIND
- IDENTIFY
- SELECT
- OBTAIN
- FRBR Entities
- e.g. WORK, PERSON, PLACE
- FRBR Attributes and Relationships
7Why replace AACR?
- RDA is designed to operate in a digital
environment - Linked data principlesbreak data down into its
individual components and link these components - RDA points towards new ways of thinking about
cataloging and new ways of doing cataloging
8Why replace AACR?
- Most of us will use RDA
- to create bibliographic and authority records
- encoded in MARC 21
- structured according to the ISBD
- For such catalogers, cataloging will not change
significantly
9Status of RDA
- RDA was published in June 2010
- RDA is currently being tested by the three U.S.
national libraries and about 25 testing partners - Test lasts from Oct.-Dec. 2010
- Test evaluation and decision Jan.-March 2011
10Status of RDA
- RDA records created by the testers and others
will appear in OCLC - New RDA headings are being created in NACO
- RDA headings are being added to existing NACO
authority records7XX fields
11Penn State policy
- During the test (and until further notice)
- Use RDA bibliographic records for copy just as
you would AACR records - Do not create RDA original records or modify RDA
records for BIBCO - Do not create RDA authority records in NACO
12Implementation and Training Plans
- In April 2011, the U.S. national libraries will
announce a decision regarding implementation of
RDA and an implementation date - PCC programs (NACO, BIBCO) will modify their
standards and revise their documentation and
training materials
13Implementation and Training Plans
- Background orientation
- FRBR and cataloging principles
- Changes to cataloging rules
- Changes to MARC
- Resources developed by other libraries
- Webinars
- Presentations
- PCC training materials(when available)
14RDA Toolkit
- The published text of RDA is called RDA Toolkit
- Online product available on the Web
