Intensive insulin therapy in patient with severe
sepsis and septic shock is associated with an
increased rate of hypoglycemia
Multicenter German study (the VISEP trial),
designed to randomize 600 subjects with medical
or surgical severe sepsis to conventional or

two sets of standard times. If the patient is

Low Glucose Reading
The final section of the order sheet describes
the treatment for hypoglycemia. The key item is
that when a person can eat, the hypoglycemia is
treated by oral glucose.
  • For BG lt70 mg/dl, use Hypoglycemia Protocol
    belowFor patient taking PO, give 20 g of oral
    fast-acting carbohydrate ? 4 glucose
    tablets (5 grams glucose/tablet)
    -OR- ? Give 6 oz. fruit juice ? Give 25
    ml of D50 IV push If patient cannot take PO ?
