All over the world
  • Administratively, the Congregation of the
    Marist Brothers is divided into territorial units
    called provinces and districts, depending on
    their size, which can be grouped into a country,
    several of them, or even regions within a
    country. This is the case of Mexico, Brazil,
    Spain and Australia nations are divided into
    different provinces.

Argentina
  • The Marist Brothers arrived in Buenos Aires,
    Argentina on October 25, 1903. From 1920 to 1964
    there was the "Marist Province of Argentina." In
    February 1964 the Marist Argentine provinces were
    subdivided into two the "Province of Luján" and
    the "Province of Cordoba." In 1991 the two
    provinces merged into the "Province of Rio de La
    Plata". After restructuring in 2001, Argentina
    was inserted into the "Southern Cross Province,"
    together with Uruguay and Paraguay. In
    Argentina, there are currently about 27 schools
    and institutes of the Congregation as well as
    communities where important social work is
    carried out.

Brazil
  • Brazil is the country which hosts the largest
    Marist community in the world. The Marist
    Brothers arrived in this country on October 15,
    1897, settling in the town of Congonhas in Minas
    Gerais. In this country the congregation is
    divided into three administrative units called
    provinces
  • "North Central Brazil,
  • "South Central Brazil,
  • "Rio Grande do Sul,
  • "Amazon District and Federal District."

Chile
  • The Marist Brothers arrived in Chile on February
    27, 1911 settling in Los Andes, in the Valparaíso
    Region. On 25 March of that year, They opened the
    first school in the country, the Institute in
    Chacabuco.
  • At the beginning, the Marist schools occupied
    territories in the Christian Center property,
    belonging to the Archdiocese of Santiago de
    Chile.

Colombia
  • The Marist Brothers arrived in Popayan,
    Colombia, on November 26, 1889 from the port of
    Bordeaux. This was the first country they arrived
    in. At that time the province was known as
    Colombian Marist. In 2003 the "Province
    Norandina" was set up. As the congregation
    focused on education, schools were established in
    various cities such as Popayan (1952), San Juan
    de Pasto (1950), Manila (1907), Ibague (1935) and
    Bogota (1938).

Venezuela
  • Maracaibo in western Zulia s state is home of
    the Marist Brothers in Venezuela. On September
    16, 1925 the brothers Ildefonso, Carlos
    Florentino, Felix Anselmo, Sebastián Ignacio and
    José Emeterio arrived in Maracaibo from Spain and
    founded the first Catholic school for boys in
    Maracaibo, thus fulfilling one of the dreams of
    the Venezuelan Bishops.

Mexico
  • In the outskirts of the city of México, at the
    foot of the Guadalupe volcano, the Marist mission
    has taken concrete form in a project of popular
    education born at the same time as the settlement
    which took place 23 years ago. The founding
    Brothers, the teaching team and the local people
    met to analyse their difficulties and so find a
    solution to the most urgent problems
    regularisation of the land, housing, water,
    lighting, drainage, transport, education, etc.
    This work dynamics paid off in the short run and
    the basic services were provided.
  • The school caters for 642 children and
    adolescents from 6 to 15 years old, and offers
    the service of a basic education in primary,
    secondary, and prep school. At the same time, the
    school caters for handicapped children and young
    people, thanks to an inclusion project called
     Kintum  (rainbow).

  • The Miravalles pedagogical method is based on a
    participative and democratic organization
    (formation of assemblies and committees).
  • They have some projects as well free Saturday
    workshops for the children, a  rondalla 
    (troupe of musicians playing string instruments),
    a choir, a dance group and rock bands.
  • At present, work is going on the project
     calmecac , a centre of integral formation for
    youth and adolescents, where there will be an art
    school, a centre of professional formation,
    a prep, two university faculties, a sports
    complex and a large public square.
  • The Miravalles project is making a contribution
    by offering chances of growth to children and
    young people who are needy and in a state of
    vulnerability.

Canada
  • The Provincial phase of the process occurred at
    Cap-de-la-Madeleine, an important Marial
    sanctuary in Quebec, on 10th, 11th and 12th
    November 2006, in the setting of a forum of the
    Quebec Marist Movement.
  • Laypeople and brothers, eighty people from twenty
    to eighty years of age gathered during the
    morning of 11th November. They prayed, reflected,
    listened to and shared the theme One Heart, One
    Mission.

  • If you were Marcellin and were able to pose one
    sole action for deprived young people, what would
    you start to do now in the context of our
    Quebecois society?
  • The suggestions were numerous to undertake the
    foundation of a house of love to welcome and
    listen to those interested the idea of creating
    an alternative teaching establishment for those
    who detected serious problems in the public
    school system. The assembly finished with the
    Eucharist on Sunday morning. The gospel of the
    day invited us to start our journey Go, I am
    sending you, two by two. A gesture of gratitude
    was posed by eight laypeople who were committed
    to giving witness to and living the Marist
    charism. The theme One Heart, One Mission
    fulfilled its goal by bringing together one
    hundred and sixteen people who reflected upon
    Marcellins work.

Cuba
  • Some call Cuba "the pearl of the Antilles" and
    this refers to their beauty and geographical
    attractions others the "alligator asleep in the
    Caribbean" by keeping the similarity with the
    silhouette of this amphibian. The island is
    approximately 1200 kilometers long and has a
    population of eleven million, 30 of which are of
    African descent. The project was born in Cuba
    in June 1993.  The project at that time included
    seven brothers and two communities.

  • The work has focused on the pastoral care
    of two parishes.  This includes the animation of
    liturgical life, the social ministry and
    catechesis.  Marist charism and their personal
    inclinations have made the most significant
    contribution. They have concentrated their
    energies on the accompaniment of children,
    adolescents and youth as well as on training
    activities, advisory catechetical and youth
    groups.  Marist brothers are striving to carry
    forward the "shared mission" along with a small
    but enthusiastic team of lay people and a small
    group of priests . They have a motivating
    diocesan pastoral plan and an organizational
    infrastructure that enables them to address the
    most urgent needs.

  • They are excited to be able to make present
    the charism of Marcellin Champagnat in a
    socialist country, to be near children and young
    people who mostly know the Gospel, to offer a
    word of hope and guidance to boys who come from
    broken families. We are encouraged by the
    possibility of collaborating in training of lay
    catechists.

  • The Marist School (CCS in South
    Florida)   Champagnat Catholic School was
    founded by Dr. Reinaldo Alonso and his wife Mrs.
    Maria I. Alonso at a time in the history
    of    Miami when there was a shortage of
    schools.  Champagnat came in to strengthen the
    religious, the civic and patriotic roots
    of    children  coming in from Cuba and Central
    and South America.  Champagnat started under the
    auspices of the Marist Brothers,   with
     headquarters in Guatemala.  This was possible
    due to Dr. Alonsos previous years as a principal
    of the Champagnat elementary in    La Vibora,
    Cuba and later on the Champagnat High School in
    Cienfuegos, Cuba.

  •   Champagnat Miami campus opened its classroom
    doors on September 8, 1968 at the corner of 29th
    Avenue and 7th Street SW , Miami with 123
    students.  In May of 1969, they had their First
    Communion at St. Dominics Church and in June
    their first award ceremony at the Miami High
    Auditorium.  In 1970 they moved to their present
    address at 2609 NW 7th Street, Miami, Florida and
    in 1973 they opened the doors to a second campus
    presently located at 369 East 10 Street, Hialeah,
    Fl.  They now hold First Communions and
    Confirmations at St. John the Apostle and St
    Michael the Archangel Churches.  Their graduation
    ceremonies are held at our Hialeah campus for
    Kindergarten and Eighth grades.  Their High
    School graduation is at St. Michael the
    Archangel.

  • Canberra Marist College is a clear example of
    education and formation of young men into great
    persons.
  • Their most valuable mission is to run an
    exceptional Catholic school for boys, in the
    Marist tradition, where the Good News of Jesus
    Christ is proclaimed and where faith, educational
    excellence and the call for justice are
    reconciled and lived. This College, in
    partnership with the families of its students,
    aims at building on the initial formative

    15 lay brothers, serving a Catholic population of

    Seminary is a training centre for those preparing

    ministry within the Catholic Church.

Fraternal presence of Mary
  • The need to curb racial discrimination in South
    Africa made ??the brothers were pioneers in
    opening the doors of the Marist schools for
    children and youth of all races.
  • Now, in the early twenty-first century, the
    Marist Institute, with some 4,700 Brethren, is
    present in 79 countries, 20 of them in Africa. Of
    the 500 Brothers working in Africa, 350 are
    native.

CHALLENGES OF MARIST LAY OF AFRICA
  • Clearly, some challenges have discouraged many
    lay people in Africa. These include
  • Identity is an important issue facing us
    today. Some members still do not understand their
    role in the Marist Family. We ask important
    questions. Are we equal to the brothers? What is
    the level of participation in Marist
    spirituality? Once again, the issue of identity
    is not clear. Acceptance some brothers, in
    some provinces or districts in Africa, have not
    fully recognized Marist Laity. Some simply see
    them as partners in their various fields of
    apostolate. They have not done enough to
    encourage them.Training Marist Laity feel that
    there should be a process of proper training for
    the laity to become fully integrated in Marist
    spirituality.

Meeting of Marist Africa
  • The brothers responsible for the initial
    formation houses and the promoters of vocations
    in Africa have had a meeting, Nairobi, Kenya.
    This meeting is part of the long process of
    improvement and unification of the initial
    training programs in our houses of formation and
    is also part of a dialogue between the players
    training in Africa.

Participants shared and exchanged ideas on the
discernment of vocations, training to prayer and
the best method to accompany young people in our
houses of formation.
