iMERA
iMERAImplementing the Metrology European
Research Area
  • A European Commission ERA-NET
  • Coordinating Action
  • Consortium
  • 20 partners from 14 countries
  • 14 NMIs, plus JRC-IRMM
  • 5 Ministries as formal partners
  • 3 Years duration
  • Start date 1st April 2005
  • Countries with an RD programme in
  • metrology

3
Research
  • Objective is to increase impact from national
    investment in metrology RD
  • Approach
  • Exchange of information between national
programmes will enable best practice to be
identified and adopted Leading to a substantial
    increase in project level collaboration
  • Strategic activities will lead to the launching
of joint research projects, funded by the
    existing national programmes.
  • Access to special metrological facilities
available in just one or few countries
  • Joint investments in new facilities explored.
  • Final aim is a joint metrology RD programme
  • Preparation of a European Metrology Research
    Programme (EMRP)
  • Prospect of a joint action implementing the EMRP
between the European Commission and interested
countries utilising Article 169 of the European
    Treaty.

  • Quick start shared value pilot projects under
    way
  • New Joint Research Projects protocol developed
    and 11 pilot JRPs launched
  • Roadmaps developed covering existing and new
    metrology areas (41 drafts)
  • Implementing a European Metrology Research
    Programme (EMRP)

T4.4 Quick Start Project
  • Objectives of the Task
  • Early launch of a pilot project using common
    funding
  • Imposed by Commissionvery late in the day!
  • Test the practical aspects of managing centrally
    funded projects
  • RD complete by month 12, report on lessons
    learnt by month 15
  • 1st quick start project launched Study of a
real-time control unit for JDAC arrays
application to watt balance experiments, June
    2005
  • 2nd quick start project launched High
temperature fixed points for contact thermometry
    project Cockpit, December 2005

7
T 3.3 Template JRPs
  • A new iMERA RD project template tries to capture
the helpful parts of an EU contract in a simpler
    form
  • The new form aims to set out for each project
  • Clear technical and scientific objectives
  • Projected impact
  • Defined work programme
  • Partner responsibilities
  • Funding agreement
  • Deliverables with due dates
  • Identified and committed resources from the
    partners against each work package

8

Article 169
  • In implementing the multiannual framework
programme, the Community may make provision, in
agreement with the Member States concerned, for
    participation in research and development
programmes undertaken by several Member States,
including participation in the structures created
for the execution of those programmes.
