    doctrine

    for sins
  • Kingdom has not come
  • Miraculous gifts today
  • Organization of the church
  • Original sin
  • Salvation by faith only
  • Ten Commandments (other parts of the Law) in
    effect today

5
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • History of miraculous gifts in the New Testament
  • Besides the Lords own miracles
  • First associated with 12 apostles Mt. 10.5-8
  • Then the seventy Luke 10.1-17 (note v.17)

6
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • Joel prophesied Joel 2.28-29, 32
  • Jesus promised revelation of Word John 14 16
  • Jesus promised power - Acts 1.4-5, 8
  • Apostles received Acts 2 (vv. 16-21 Joel)
  • Holy Spirit gave to others by laying on of
    apostles hands Acts 8.15, 17-18 19.6

7
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • What they were 1 Cor. 12.4
  • There are diversities of gifts, but the same
    Spirit.
  • (The word gifts here is the Greek word
charisma a divine gift, miraculous ability)

8
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • What they were 1 Cor. 12.7
  • But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to
each one for the profit of all

9
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • What they were 1 Cor. 12.8-11
  • 1. word of wisdom this gift would be an oral
proclamation of a message which had wisdom for
    its content.
  • 2. word of knowledge the exact distinction of
this gift from the previous gift is unknown.
Perhaps it was a more precise understanding of
    Gods will.

10
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • 3. faith this was not mere belief, but was
apparently a miraculous working faith a faith
that carried with it a divine power (1
    Corinthians 132, Matthew 1720, 2120-21).
  • 4. gifts of healings the power to restore
health to those with physical aliments. This is
one of the more popular gifts that people claim
to have today, but the spectacles that are passed
off today as evidence of a miracle do not compare
to the healings that were actually performed by
the Lord and His apostles in the New Testament.

11
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • 5. working of miracles the ability to perform
supernatural acts in order to confirm the
    teaching of the gospel.
  • 6. prophecy the word prophet indicates that
one is a mouth-piece or spokesman for God. This
gift enabled one to reveal the truth concerning
the past, present, and future will of God. One
who possessed this gift had the power to impart
divine revelation. Paul said that this was a more
    desirable gift (1 Corinthians 141).

12
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • 7. discerning of spirits in a time when divine
revelation was being given through men, the
church needed a way to determine who was a true
    prophet or teacher (1 Corinthians 1429, 37 1
John 41). This gift was a means of protecting
    the early church.
  • 8. different kinds of tongues the ability to
speak in an existing, understandable language
that one had not learned (Acts 24-8). This gift
is misunderstood today to be the uncontrollable
uttering of ecstatic sounds. However, the Bible
says that this gift could be controlled (1
    Corinthians 1427-28).
  • 9. interpretation of tongues this gift was the
ability to understand a language and translate it
    for the church

13
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • What they did
  • Six of the gifts revealed the Word
  • Word of wisdom
  • Word of knowledge
  • Prophecy
  • Discerning of spirits
  • Tongues
  • Interpretation of tongues

14
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • What they did
  • The remaining three, along with the six,
confirmed the word that was received
  • Faith
  • Healing
  • Miracles
  • Mark 16.20
  • Hebrews 2.4

15
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • Why they ceased
  • God said they would Zechariah 13.1-2
  • Paul said they would 1 Corinthians 13.8-9
  • Their reason for existing has ceased
  • The word has been revealed
  • And it has been confirmed

16
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • Why they ceased
  • 2 Peter 1.3
  • Jude 3
  • Hebrews 2.1-4

17
Miraculous Gifts in New Testament
  • Christians as of 135 AD knew they had ceased

18
Beginning of the Error
  • Montanus
  • Scholars are divided as to when Montanus first
began his prophetic activity, having chosen dates
varying from c. AD 135 to as late as AD 177.1
Montanus travelled among the rural settlements of
Asia Minor, and preached and testified what he
regarded as the Word of God however, his
teachings came to be regarded as heresy by the
orthodox Church for a number of reasons. He
claimed to have received a series of direct
revelations from the Holy Spirit. In some of his
prophecies Montanus apparently spoke in the first
person as God, somewhat like the oracular
    prophecies of the Greco-Roman world.
  • Many understood this to be Montanus claiming
himself to be God or the Holy Spirit.

19
Beginning of the Error
  • Montanus had two female colleagues, Prisca
(sometimes called Priscilla), and Maximilla, who
likewise claimed the inspiration of the Holy
Spirit. As they went, "the Three" spoke in
ecstatic visions and urged their followers to
fast and pray, so that they might share these
revelations. The preachings of Montanus spread
from his native Phrygia (where he proclaimed the
village of Pepuza as the site of the New
Jerusalem) across the Christian world, to Africa
    and Gaul.
  • The Church defeated Montanism within a few
    generations, and it died

20
History of the Error
  • Various claims over the centuries of miracles,
    most received with skepticism
  • Modern day charismatic movement may date from the
1400s when tongues speaking was first claimed
    again

21
History of the Error
  • Shakers Quakers
  • 1901 (or 1909) saw renewed claims of baptism in
    the Holy Spirit
  • Pentecostal and Holiness movements

22
Whats Wrong with Claiming Spiritual Gifts Today?
  • Those who claim them deny the words of prophecy
    concerning them
  • They are no different than the false prophets of
the Old Testament who led Israel astray!

23
Result of Claiming Spiritual Gifts Today
  • Many are deceived by it
  • New revelations prove false and bring reproach
    upon the truth
  • Matthew 7.21-23

24
The Solution?
  • Hear the Word that was delivered and confirmed
  • Be a Doer of that will
