Title: OUR NATION CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH this FEBRUARY!

1
OUR NATION CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH this
FEBRUARY!
2
Every February, we are asked to remember
the many African-Americans in our country who
struggled for civil rights.
3
What are civil rights?
4
These are the freedoms that many of us take for
granted
5
They include the freedom to go to school where
we want to
6
To work at a job of our choice and interest
7
To live in a house and neighborhood where we
want
8
And to vote for our own leaders.
9
But not everyone in our country has always been
treated equally.
10
Sometimes, African-Americans were treated
differently and unfairly.
11
Not everyone has enjoyed these civil rights.
12
Our history is full of very brave people who
fought for equality.
13
And many used their right of FREE SPEECH found in
the First Amendment to bring about change!
14
Lets take a look at some of these leaders who
fought for civil rights.
15
Sojourner Truth worked for civil rights in New
York and other states in the early 1800s. She
was a speaker all over the country demanding
womens rights to vote!
16
Frederick Douglas started his own newspaper. He
wrote against slavery and traveled around the
country giving speeches, telling people about his
experiences as a slave. He used his FIRST
AMENDMENT freedoms to convince people about the
evils of slavery.
17
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a preacher and
leader for African-Americans civil rights.
He used his freedom of speech and the press,
asking for people to be judged by their
contributions, not by the color of their skin.
