Organizational Challenges faced by GTU
  • Part VI

31
GTU is the Largest University in Gujarat
  • For the smooth functioning of a vast University
like GTU, which caters to the entire field of
Engineering, Pharmacy, MBA Programs and Computer
    Applications (MCA), a well-designed
organizational structure is not only essential,
    but absolutely imperative.
  • GTU has about 4,00,000 students, a large number
of Bachelors and Masters programs, and robust
doctoral programs. It has about 500 colleges
affiliated from all nooks and corners of Gujarat.
  • Hence, for such a large University it is quite
    essential that the (proposed) organizational
    structure is developed considering successful
functioning of Indias, Asias and Worlds some
of the best Universities and educational
    institutions mentioned in the review.

32
Suggested Structure for GTU
  • Overall Structure
  • Academic Structure (for Schools and Centers)
  • Administrative Structure (Head Office / Wings /
    Centers and Schools)
  • The suggested Organization Structure for GTU in
the following slides is for easy understanding,
and a consensus is being developed by GTUs
    stakeholders DSTU Research Team, VC
    Registrar, and Government of Gujarat

33
Matrix of Major Functions _at_ GTU
34
Pyramid Structure for GTU
35
GTU and Academic Programs
36
Challenge is to establish inter-relationships
among GTUs Programs
37
Second Challenge is to establish Linkages with
Industries and Global Universities
38
Third Challenge is to manage various Pressure
Groups
39
Forth Challenge is to Manage Processes of
Teaching Learning
40
Therefore
  • The suggested or proposed Organization Structure
    for GTU must address Issues
  • All four major challenges on one hand, and
  • Take GTU to become a world class university to
  • Satisfy the educational and employment or
business needs of our young population in the
    21st Century

58
In a Nutshell
  • Part IX

59
In a Nutshell
  • GTUs proposed Organization Structure may be
Matrix-based, a mix of hierarchy at Head Quarter,
with Decentralization at Regional Level with
sufficient Autonomy to each Head of the Function
    / Department / Wing / Section
  • to take decisions and be responsible for its own
    decisions,
  • Within the framework of authority and
    responsibility, accountability, chain of command,
    inter-personal relationship and team-based
    approach
  • (like todays public sector Banks that have
    become more efficient, wide-spread,
customer-centric and profitable than many private
    sector Banks).

60
Your Suggestions are Welcome to Catapult GTU as a
World Class University by Y 2020
  • Hon. Vice Chancellor shall follow up with the
    DSTU Team, Internal and External
    Stakeholdersuntil the new organization structure
    is adopted and implemented.
  • My Suggestion To convert DSTU Research Project
    into
  • DSTU Research Centre

61
Thank you !!!
  • On Behalf of Dr Akshai Aggarwal,
  • Hon, Vice Chancellor, and
  • DSTU Team
