Title: Embedding e-learning in the school curriculum

1
Embedding e-learning in the school curriculum
Tim Brosnan Assistant Head
2
Background Hampstead School
  • A Technology College with strong traditions in
the cross-curricular use of ICT and the creative
    arts
  • More Cricklewood than Hampstead
  • gt30 of pupils qualify for free school meals
  • gt40 have English as a second (or third) language
  • gt30 are on the schools Special Needs register
  • 130 (10 of the school population) are refugees
  • Results well above the average of schools with
similar social intakes in many cases above the
95th percentile (PANDA) and equal to or above
    national averages

3
Principles
  • To empower members of the school community by
developing their ICT capability so that they
become effective and independent users of new
    technologies
  • Embed ICT at the heart of teaching and learning

4
Practice
  • No timetabled ICT lessons at KS 3 or 4
  • Two ICT rooms free of timetabled classes- and
    others bookable
  • ICT staff have no timetabled classes (other than
    16)
  • They work with colleagues in other departments
jointly to plan and teach programmes of study

5
Examples
  • Pupils
  • Great Expectations
  • Musical Pictures
  • Staff
  • Coastal Erosion
  • Pupils and Staff
  • Crime Survey

6
Advantages
  • ICT capability is taught in authentic curriculum
    contexts
  • All subjects can embed ICT in their schemes of
    work
  • Staff training in ICT pedagogy and skills is
    classroom-based, achieved collaboratively with
supportive colleagues, and addresses the specific
    learning/ teaching concerns of each
    teacher/department

7
What next?
  • Stop ICT being special by bringing ICT to the
class rather the class to ICT
  • Set of Tablet PCs for use in the Maths department
    in conjunction with Interactive Whiteboards
  • Whole school access to shared resources and their
    user areas from home
  • To empower students so they can make an even
    greater impact on their world
