Title: E-Commerce/Technology Has leveled the Playing Field for Less Developed Companies.

1
  • E-Commerce/Technology Has leveled the Playing
    Field for Less Developed Companies.
  • By
  • Paulette Reeves

2
  • The very essence of our survival sits
precariously on the pinnacle of technology
  • Many connotations associated with the word
    technology - like e-commerce

3
  • E-Commerce/technology is as revolutionary as the
downfall of the monarchy during the French
    Revolution.
  • The French revolution brought about the emergence
of a middle class in Europe
  • E-commerce revolution is also directly
responsible for elevating the standard of living
for people in less developed countries.

4
  • Many of these people are slowly rising above the
poverty level and words like technology,
internet, e-commerce represent a light at the end
    of a tunnel
  • That light offers hope, salvation and release
    from their impoverished world.
  • It offers an escape, a promise that they too can
live their own version of the American dream.

5
  • Before we can look at e-commerce abroad we must
look at what it means to developed countries.
  • Entrepreneurship in countries like America has
    always been encouraged.
  • Policies have been put in place to pave the way
for those with a dream to follow that dream.
  • Brief look at Generation X-ers in America They
have been directly responsible for driving up the
standard of living and for embarking on more
    entrepreneurship opportunities than any other
    generation before them.

6
  • The technology revolution has in turn provided a
way for everyone to be an entrepreneur in some
    kind of capacity
  • We have a prime example right here in our
    classroom our own professor Kopec.

7
  • Anyone with a PC and a modem can bring about
change whether it is positive change setting up
websites that bash corporations who are abusing
the environment and forcing them to become more
    environmentally friendly.
  • negative change like funneling money to
terrorists to give them the capability of
    enabling another terrorist attack.

8
  • The world has changed so much in the past 30
years that it has forced all of us to re-evaluate
how we are positioned, and how we fit into this
    revolution.
  • We decide if we want to be participants or if we
want to sit on the sidelines and hope for the
    best.

9
  • Those who sit on the sidelines are being driven
backward, and are floundering in this new world.
  • Constantly gaining more knowledge is the only way
we can hope to survive during this revolution.

10
  • It is important that we address the issue of the
impact of e-commerce on countries that were
    previously ignored.
  • This new technological age has catapulted them
into becoming major forces to be reckoned with in
    this globalization era.

11
  • Their participation is helping them to become
shapers in this new world, and not just passive
    bystanders.
  • Less developed countries have often been pawns
    for the developed countries.
  • Developed countries have dominated them for
    years.

12
  • We use these countries for their cheap labor.
  • This factor has not been pushed aside but with
the advent of technology more and more companies
in developed countries have started to utilize
both the UNSKILLED labor force AND the SKILLED,
educated labor force of less developed countries.
  • Utilization of the educated masses is the major
    contributing factor.

13
  • Outsourcing has provided these countries with
massive opportunities and has drastically helped
    to lower their unemployment rates.
  • Foreign investors are lining up to invest in
their countries and take advantage of their
    flourishing economies.
  • These changes have all been made possible because
    of the massive technological advances.

14
  • In developed countries technology and e-commerce
has ultimately created more efficient economies,.
  • Companies have be forced to eliminate the waste
    of the 1980s.
  • E-Commerce has created much more competition and
this has forced companies to downsize in order
to cut down on expenses and overhead and improve
    on efficiencies.

15
  • The companies who were slow to do this paid the
price of incurring losses or seeing reduced
    profits.
  • In order to cut costs countries started rapidly
sending major parts of their business oversees
    business.
  • This raised the economies of developed countries,
but also resulted in a drastic reduction of white
    collar jobs.
  • The exodus of IT jobs, and accounting jobs in the
    U. S is forcing many professional workers into
    unemployment.

16
  • E-Commerce is also creating a greater disparity
in developed countries between the upper and
    middle class.
  • U.S tends to have to have a winner takes all
    attitude.
  • When compared to developed countries, it is
widely believed that less developed countries can
more adequately reap the benefits of technology.

17
  • There are some developing countries that have
    benefited more substantially than others.
  • For example countries in East Asia have been more
successful than countries in the Middle East,
North Africa and Sub- Saharan Africa.

18
  • There are a number of reasons that can be
attributed to the success of countries like China
    and India.
  • One key aspect is that these countries have
always turned out a highly educated populace.
  • This is serving them well during this revolution.

19
  • The fact that the world is evolving into being
more of knowledge-based society has provided
great opportunities for many countries like China
    and India.
  • They are now able to keep their educated workers
close to home instead of having them seek work in
    America and Europe.
  • Additionally, tougher immigration policies in
the United States are beginning to limit the
importation of knowledge to our shores.

20
  • E-Commerce has allowed these less developed
countries to export their goods and services on a
scale that would have been hard to envision just
    a few decades ago.
  • Pressures on corporations to stream line and
improve their bottom line have allowed both blue
collar and white-collar jobs to be exported
overseas, which is creating major concern in
    developed countries.

21
  • It is widely believed that as a country we are
    endangering our own economy.
  • People in developed countries represent the
biggest customer base for the products being
    produced elsewhere.
  • Companies have to be careful on hard far they can
push outsourcing before there is a backlash from
    consumers in developed countries.

22
  • There is still a lot of work to be done to bring
these developing countries up to speed.
  • It cannot be ignored that technology and
e-commerce are the main factors that will be the
saving grace for all impoverished countries

23
  • This new era is still in the beginning stages but
it definitely provides advantages that have not
been made available before to these countries .
  • It gives them options, and hope.

24
  • Countries like Africa still have to make a lot of
progress before they can play on this world
    stage.
  • In many cases the telecommunications
    infrastructure is not in place.
  • There are regions where there is no access to
telephones and the ability to have different ways
of paying for your goods and services (like the
use of credit cards) is not yet available .

25
  • This provides major problems to the developing
    countries that want to advance.
  • A lot of countries are realizing that they have a
responsibility to educate their citizens and find
ways for them to have access to the necessary
    technology.

26
  • E-Commerce will eventually let these people lift
themselves out of severe poverty and become
    contributing members to society.
  • They will eventually become major forces to be
    reckoned with in the future.
