2
  • What? When? Where?
  • Art Nouveau (New Art) was an international style
of decoration and architecture which developed in
the 1880s and 1890s and was popular until the
    1920s and 1930s.
  • The movement began in Paris and spread
throughout Europe and America. It was called
    different names in different countries.

3
Hector Guimard (Paris Metro)
  • Why?
  • A new group of artists wanted to invent a style
of art which would make use of new materials.
Architects wanted to experiment with glass and
iron which allowed them to make use of curved
lines, rather than the straight, solid forms that
had been used in the past.

4
  • Artists were influenced by Eastern Art (from
China and Japan) which made use of swerving lines
    and bold simplification.

Style
  • Although the style of Art Nouveau varied
slightly from country to country, in general it
can be recognised by the use of flowing lines
based on natural forms. Plants, flowers , shells
and animals were all sources of inspiration for
    designers

7
  • The style influenced all kinds of design from
    illustration, to architecture, interior design,
    furniture, graphic design and jewellery.

8
What materials do you think have been used to
make these?
9
Antoni Gaudi (Architect, Barcelona)
10
  • Antoni Gaudi designed an entire house in
Barcelona where no wall was straight.
  • He also had to design special curved furniture
    to fit into the rooms

  • Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a Scottish
    Architect and Interior Designer.
