THE HOLLYWOOD TEN
  • In the year 1947 there was a group of Hollywood
    Directors, screenwriters, and producers who
    refused to talk about their involvement with the
    communist party
  • This group of individuals were called the
    Hollywood Ten

    Edward Dmytryk, Ring Lardner Jr., John Howard
    Lawson, Albert Maltz, Samuel Ornitz, Adrian Scot

  • Many people believed that communists were putting
    hidden messages in Hollywood films to persuade
    the viewers.

  • The government group that was in charge of
    investigating the Hollywood Ten and their
    affiliation with Communism was the House of
    Un-American Activates Committee

    Un-American Activities Committee

  • The Hollywood Ten refused to answer any questions
    (pleaded the 5th) about their involvement with
    being communist party to the HUAC
  • They believed that the constitution gave them the
    right not to answer any of these questions
  • The HUAC and the courts disagreed with this claim
    and each person involved was sent to prison form
    anywhere between 6 to 12 months
  • These Hollywood actors were then blacklisted from
    the Hollywood film industry until the 1960s when
    the ban was lifted.

HOLLYWOOD 10 TRIALS
  • The charge was contempt of congress
  • Sentence 1 year in prison and 1000 fine
    (Bessie, Cole, Lardner, Lawson, Maltz, Ornitz,
    Scott, and Trumbo) 6 months in prison and 500
    fine for (Biberman, and Dmytryk)

  • E.B. White commented, "Ten men have been
    convicted, not of wrong-doing but of wrong
    thinking that is news in this country and if I
    have not misread my history, it is bad news."

The McCarran-Walter Act
  • In 1952 the act was passed over the presidents
    veto. It maintained the quota system. Also
    removed the ban on the immigration of Asian and
    pacific people.
  • Truman vetoed the McCarran-Walter Act because he
    regarded the bill as "un-American" and
    discriminatory.
  • It also got rid of gender discrimination, gave
    preference to aliens with special skills and
    supported for more rigorous security screening.

  • The law made a lot of conflict, mainly on the
    people that it discriminated in favor of northern
    and western European nations.
  • The act also empowered the Department of Justice
    to deport immigrants or naturalized people
    engaging in subversive activates.
